On the 10th of December, BC Gallery in Berlin will be opening a solo show by Czech artist Jan Kalab (interviewed). Tension will include a new series of his recognizable round canvases as well as a large sculpture following along the lines of his circle inspired works.
The title of the show comes from the structure of his paintings, which are based on a perfect circle. And when using a limited color palete, these pieces carry a strong feeling of tension. With border colors clashing against the main color covering most of the piece, and shapes changing from geo perfect towards organic, they feel almost alive and unpredictable. These works are a result of Kalab’s minimalization of his graffiti influences to the point of an almost ultimate perfect shape – a circle. It’s in this tiny area between the perfect circle and clean sphere shape that he experiments with organic and abstract shapes.
