Previews: Jan Kaláb “Pulso Cromático” @ Fabien Castanier Gallery

Jan Kalab (interviewed) is continuing to present his unique works around the world. After events in Miami, Prague and Berlin, he is currently in Colombia where he will be opening Pulso Cromático at Fabien Castanier Gallery in Bogota, on March 17th. For this show, he prepared a new body of work introducing his continuing experiments with geo shapes – mainly circles. Playing with one of the most basic and perfect shapes, he is using it as a focal element of his abstract paintings, applying it as the format of his custom shaped pieces and even deconstructing the classic canvas […]

Here is the followup with photos from the exhibition entitled Tension, which will stay on view until the 23rd of January. Previews: Jan Kalab – “Tension” @ BC Gallery

On the 10th of December, BC Gallery in Berlin will be opening a solo show by Czech artist Jan Kalab (interviewed). Tension will include a new series of his recognizable round canvases as well as a large sculpture following along the lines of his circle inspired works. The title of the show comes from the structure of his paintings, which are based on a perfect circle. And when using a limited color palete, these pieces carry a strong feeling of tension. With border colors clashing against the […]

Showing: Jan Kalab – “Extra” @ Villa Pelle

On the 29th of June, Jan Kalab (featured) opened his ninth solo show at the Villa Pelle in Prague, showing pieces created exclusively for this event. After introducing his art at fairs worldwide, this was an opportunity to put his work on display in his homeland. The Czech artist uses a lot of geometry elements and pure, bright colors in creating his pieces, which often blur the distinction between art and design. His minimalist visual language has been affected by his graffiti work, when minimalism was a necessity. […]

Interviews / Studio Visits: Jan Kalab

Jan Kalab is a Czech artist that was one of the pioneers of graffiti in his homeland. As a founder of the DSK crew, his career stretched from Prague’s train yards to painting whole cars in NYC in 2000. Around that time, he developed an interest for 3D graffiti and eventually started sculpting huge abstracts letters. This eventually evolved into passion for abstraction when in 2007 he graduated from the Academy of fine Arts of Prague. One year later, he had his first solo show and continued actively […]
