Updates: Alex Gross Cabinet Card Paintings

Fans of Alex Gross (interviewed) will no doubt know about his special interest in cabinet cards, a style of mounted photography widely used for photographic portraiture after 1870, with the latest produced up to the 1920s. From the dates, you can probably guess that these are collectibles, of which the Los Angeles-based painter has been acquiring for a while now. Along with surreal new paintings for her upcoming solo at Corey Helford Gallery in Los Angeles, Camille Rose Garcia will also be presenting some Snow White water color and ink works on paper. With her work strongly influenced by fairy tales, especially the darker non-mainstream original versions of the stories, fans will remember that she has gone back to the source in the past to illustrate some of her favorites like Alice in the Wonderland as well as Snow White. Only 10 days ahead of his big London debut, Pejac released another fresh intervention created recently on the streets of British capital. As a response to Brexit and it’s causes and consequences, the Spanish artist came up with yet another fresh concept to comment on the sensitive sociopolitical issue. The second edition of POW! WOW! Long Beach is underway with artists painting in the streets as well as inside the Long Beach Museum of Art for the upcoming Vitality & Verve: In The Third Dimension show (covered). Upcoming: Jeff Soto – “The Sotofish Society” @ Jonathan LeVine Gallery

On September 10th, Jeff Soto (interviewed) will be returning to Jonathan LeVine Gallery in New York for another solo show. Entitled The Sotofish Society, the exhibition will see the Southern California-based artist re-exploring some of the past elements of his work including yetis, reapers, robots, landscapes, antlers, geometric shapes, and of course the iconic Sotofish! Italian artist and activist Blu visited Slovenia last month in order to support the efforts of the local Rog Factory (Tovarna Rog) squat in their fight against the municipality of Ljubljana. During his stay, the street artist painted a strong piece depicting a gun created out of different tools, instruments and equipment used by the squatters, symbolizing their strength in their fight against the capital. Streets: Deih // North West Walls (Belgium)

Recently during the Rock Werchter Festival of Belgium, Deih was invited to paint some stacked metal storage containers for the North West Walls event. Currently showing at Gallery 1988 West is 20 Years Later, a group exhibition featuring artwork inspired by films from 1996. Cult films are certainly a subject that the Los Angeles showplace has delved into before (including last year’s 30 Years Later show).
