This past weekend, our friends at Complex held their first ever “pop culture world fair” in Los Angeles and it was pretty spectacular. Entitled ComplexCon, the inaugural convention gathered some of the top creative minds in the respective fields of fashion, music, culinary fare and of course art to create a unique two day event to satisfy even the most adventurous individual. The staff at AM had the run of the Long Beach Convention Center and there were more events & exhibits than we could fit in. With contributions from super creatives such as Skrillex, Pharrell, and Kaikai Kiki, the entire event was produced to stimulate the senses.
Collectives such as Seventh Letter & POW! WOW! exhibited enticing art works. Artists such as Daniel Arsham, James Jean, Ron English Dabs & Myla and Patrick Martinez gave their interpretation on what it’s like to make art in the generation of the millennials. Of course, the entire Complexcon was graced by the eye-catching SuperFlat art motifs designed by legendary Japanese artist Takashi Murakami. We were enthralled by the interactive art bubble created by Murakami which enveloped curious visitors on multiple sensory levels (seen above). Of course, it wouldn’t be a “con” if there were not goodies to be taken home. Fans queued up for hours to get a glimpse into the gift shop which sold Murakami treasures including his famous prints, skate decks, Kaikai Kiki apparel, and a new limited DOB sculpture.
