Street Art Shows Strong @ Sotheby’s Contemporary Day Auction

We heard a rumor that the economy is not well and the art market is hurting. Apparently, the folks attending Sotheby’s Contemporary Day auction don’t agree. Today’s sale yielded solid results, with 337 lots pulling in over 21.5 million USD. Among the amazing lineup of artists, such as Warhol, Basquiat, Kippenberger and Cy Twombly, AM noted the inclusion of two iconic names from the “Urban Art” genre: Shepard Fairey and Banksy. Openings: Mark Brown – The Lost MacGuffin @ Gallery 1988

Good idea and great execution. That’s the impression we walked away with at Mark Brown’s debut solo show at  Gallery 1988 (LA).  The beautiful paintings in “The Lost MacGuffin” are actually linked in a cohesive and fluid storyline. Starting off from one end of the gallery to the other, the audience will see the story unfolding in each painting. The premise revolves around MacGuffin’s encyclopedia and the drama that unfolds while the characters pursue the mythical book. The art work is top notch and the details […]

Tunnel 228 Theatre x Art Show by Kevin Spacey

The vaults under Waterloo Station have been taken over by artistic director Kevin Spacey and his team from the Old Vic Theatre for their latest venture: Tunnel 228. A very cool “pop up” art show and theatre experience that seems to have come out of nowhere. Via a mysterious website which poses as a legit business, people can get free tickets to the event via a hidden link that allows the visitor to participate in the project. The show includes work by ATMA, Mark Jenkins, Antony […]

Openings: Mars-1 @ Billy Shire Fine Arts

AM stopped by Billy Shire Fine Arts to catch Mars-1’s latest show. Hot off his last show “Nuclear Mystics” at Jonathan LeVine Gallery, Mars-1 continued his direction of creating larger pieces that capture the grand-scale feeling his imagery evokes. The show also featured new resin statues in a color we did not see at his last show at Jonathan Levine Gallery. Check out all the detailed pics after the jump.

Openings: Ron English – “Lazarus Rising” @ Elms Lesters

Ron English’s latest solo show at Elms Lesters opened this past Friday with the UK crowd bustling to get a glimpse of the Jersey-based artist’s latest body of work. Ron’s mastery of both indoor and outdoor techniques were clearly represented in this latest series. As we mentioned earlier, these works spanned not only his signature portraits, but also his use of comic book collages and satirical characters. Be on the look out as we’ve got an exclusive behind-the-scenes studio visit with Ron as he was […]

LeBasse Projects: Dining with Yoskay Yamamoto & Melissa Haslam

Fine dining and even finer art – that’s what life’s all about. Last night, AM was invited to attend a very intimate dinner with a small group of collectors to preview the upcoming shows of Yoskay Yamamoto (featured) and Melissa Haslam (interviewed). The dinner was hosted by LeBasse Projects and provided a select few some private time to interact with the artists and find out more about their work and artistic direction. The fun night also gave attendees a chance to catch up and have spirited discussions […]

Openings: “Get Rich Quick!” Group Exhibition @ Carmichael Gallery

Last night, the Carmichael Gallery in Hollywood pulled no punches with their all-star show, “Get Rich Quick!,” showcasing the strongest talents in the street and urban art genre. Some scorching hot pieces lined the gallery’s walls for the exhibition, including: a rare Banksy canvas, a KAWS ad disruption, boxes and screen-printed collages from Faile, to originals by Barry McGee and Micallef and much more. Visiting the gallery was like seeing a modern day museum retrospective of the last five years in urban art. Truly amazing. AM has all the […]

Openings: Logan Hicks & Broken Crow – “Broken Horse”

This past weekend, Logan Hicks and Broken Crow (Mike Fitzsimmons & John Grider) opened their “drive-by” show “Broken Horse” for a packed Brooklyn house. Held in a unique venue that once housed the Hamilton Savings & Loan, the art was really the draw. Utilizing an intricate stenciling process, Logan was able to create scenic snapshots of some of the coolest urban landscapes we’ve seen from a stencil artist. Broken Crow brought mother nature back to the concrete jungle by integrating the animal back into the […]

Preview/Interviews: Melissa Haslam – “Wild Fields” @ LeBasse Projects

Australian up-and-comer Melissa Haslam visits Los Angeles for her latest exhibition “Wild Fields” at LeBasse Projects opening this Saturday, May 9th, in the gallery’s project room. Her interesting use of independent girls and hauntingly beautiful botanic backdrops has caused quite a buzz with fans and collectors. Haslam’s been busy prepping for the opening, but made some time for a quick interview with AM. Read the interview and see a preview of the show after the jump…
