We got a chance to check out Gallery 1988’s (LA) Beastie Boys tribute show “Under the Influence,” and what a trip down memory lane! The artwork really captured the variety of far reaching themes and videos that made the Beastie Boys such an icon since the 1980’s. Check out the Shepard Fairey’s […]

Manifest Hope – Inauguration Party: Shepard Fairey x friends

Manifest Hope: DC zenithed with a sensational party on it’s final night, Monday. On the eve of the presidential inauguration, the artists and volunteers that led the charge of Barack Obama’s triumphant grassroots campaign celebrated with a star-studded event that rivaled many of the inaugural balls the following night. With live performances by Santo Gold,  Adam Freeland, DJ Trouble Maker, Grammy winning artists: De La Soul, Moby, and of course DJ Diabetic himself (Shepard Fairey); it was no wonder the venue was packed to the brim and rockin’ deep […]

Openings: Shepard Fairey’s Obama “Hope” @ Smithsonian: National Portrait Gallery

The Smithsonian Institution has always been considered one of most prestigious museums in the world. It houses some amazing works including the “Portraits of America’s Presidents.” So, what’s a more fitting way to kick off the inauguration weekend than with the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery unveiling and inducting Shepard Fairey’s symbolic “Hope” image of Barack Obama. (previously announced here.) AM was invited to come along all-access and document the historic unveiling ceremony. The elegant brunch reception in the Smithsonian courtyard preceded the unveiling as Shepard mingled with the “who’s who” that […]

Setup: Manifest Hope – DC

AM is on-site at Manifest Hope DC and it is getting hectic at the gallery. It’s midnight here and the crew of over 30 volunteers are now running on Red Bull and Red Stripe. We are at ground zero of this awesome show and only a few days before the show goes live. With giant installations under construction from Mike Murphy and Kelly Towles, the place is abuzz with power-saws and drills. The other part of the crew is busy unpacking the never ending stream of boxes […]

Teaser: Mark Ryden @ Tomio Koyama

One of the artists that most impressed us at Art Basel, Mark Ryden, is set to show in one of Japan’s most prestigious galleries Tomio Koyama in February. The show is entitled “Snow Yak,” and from the looks of things, Mark is continuing with “snowy white” as his color palette that we saw at the Tomio Koyama booth at Art Basel (here).  We obtained a few teaser images to whet your appetite til the show opens next month in Tokyo. Stay tuned as AM has […]

Openings: James Jean “Kindling” @ Jonathan Levine Gallery

Last night, Jonathan Levine hosted an exclusive friends and family viewing of James Jean’s Kindling. The Chelsea gallery was filled from the opening minutes with many New York art notables including: Susan Sarandon, Eric White, David Choe, Jonathan Viner, Esao Andrew, Travis Louie, and Molly Crabapple. The stunning show was a visual mix of abstract, illustrative, and an “east meets west” fusion of artistic ingenuity. With most pieces gobbled up before the doors even opened, there was little doubt in the minds of many that […]
