Openings: Swoon – “Braddock Tiles Benefit Group Exhibition”

Back in November, Swoon (interviewed) led a project entitled Braddock Tiles aimed to revitalize a Lutheran church from the early 20th century. Superchief Gallery and the Anita Shapolsky Foundation hosted an evening of celebration and launched the project with a series of prints and original works also contributed by ROA, RETNA, Dennis McNett and more.

Basel Week Miami ’13: Audrey Kawasaki for Thinkspace @ SCOPE

Just like earlier last year for SCOPE during Basel Week Switzerland (covered), the Thinkspace Gallery booth in Miami was also featured a mini-solo show from Audrey Kawasaki (interviewed). Included in the new body of work were her familiar exquisite portraiture of seductively innocent girls, with her technique taking advantage of the wood grain in each piece. Take a look at more photos below… Discuss Audrey Kawasaki here.

Showing: Kelsey Brookes – “Better Living Through Chemistry” @ Judith Charles Gallery

We stopped by Kelsey Brookes‘ first solo exhibition recently in New York at Judith Charles Gallery. Entitled Better Living Through Chemistry, this show features a large body of work focusing in on his abstract paintings and musings via eye catching molecular structures. This style is also based on his scientific background and delves further into drugs and its effect on the human consciousness. The paintings, large and small in scale, filled the two floor gallery space and is pretty psychedelic to experience in person. This show runs […]

Paintings: Yayoi Kusama – “I Who Have Arrived In Heaven” @ David Zwirner Gallery

By now, you’ve all heard the monumental buzz that this Yayoi Kusama’s exhibition I Who Have Arrived In Heaven has created with lines that exponentially grew from 30-45 mins to 4-6 hours in the course of less than a month. Mind you, art lovers endured near freezing NYC weather to take in the one minute zen experience of being one on one with Kusama’s Souls of Millions of Light Years Away (experienced here) infinity room installation. What many may not have known is that powerhouse gallery David Zwirner gave […]

Basel Week Miami ’13: Daniel Arsham – “Future Relic”

One of the launch events during Art Basel Week was Future Relic by Daniel Arsham (seen above with artist DRx Romanelli). Presented by OHWOW Gallery, this event served to debut a collaborative film starring Daniel with fashion designer Richard Chai and features Ben Louis Nicholas as the director of photography and music created by Swiss Beats. This mysterious film draws visual language cues from Lawrence of Arabia and part one (seen below) sets up a journey where Arsham’s “future relics” are found. More parts of the film will […]

Basel Week Miami ’13: Vanessa Beecroft x Kanye West @ Mana Wynwood

During Art Basel Week, Vanessa Beecroft x Kanye West took part in the Affordable Care group show (covered here) curated by Flaunt Magazine in Miami’s Mana Wynwood Complex. This unique project pulled together two controversial artists (Beecroft & West) that have long drawn curiosity and criticism in their careers. Vanessa Beecroft, an accomplished peformance artist often utilizes live female models (often nude) as well as the audience and their genuine/awkward interactions to illustrate political, historical or social themes in the context of the location. Kanye of […]

Basel Week Miami ’13: NADA Fair (Part II)

The NADA art fair held at the Deauville Beach Resort during Art Basel Week is widely considered one of the other worthy satellite events after “the main fair.” NADA hosts many fresh and upcoming artists in the scene. If you’re searching for a unique perspectives and want to preview out some of the newer directions & trends in the world of art, this fair is definitely one that influences many collectors and gallerists alike. Check out a more detailed look (Part I here) at the goodness that premiered […]

Basel Week Miami ’13: Art Basel First Look (Part II)

The “main fair” as it is affectionately called by art lovers in Miami is of course the centerpiece of Art Basel Week. Not just prestigious by namesake or by the list of illustrious galleries, but more so the high level of art exhibited by the artists who want to put forward their best work. As always, it felte like there was so much blue-chip goodness, but so little time at Art Basel. From Kapoor (seen above), Colen, Martin, De Kooning, Chamberlain, Pruitt, Houseago, Creed, Auerbach, Kusama to Longo, just to […]

Basel Week Miami ’13: Faile & Bast – “Deluxx Fluxx”

During Art Basel Week, numerous artists trek to Miami to set up artistic pop-up projects. One of our favorites this year was by the Brooklyn-based Faile and Bast. They brought their nostalgic arcade-based exhibition entitled Deluxx Fluxx to entertain both the eyes and souls of patrons that stopped by their fresh throwback arcade. As previewed in our studio visit, this collaborative project with Perrier is now in it’s third iteration (version 1.0 in London & 2.0 in NYC) and it continued to push the envelope. It wasn’t […]

Basel Week Miami ’13: “Affordable Care” @ Mana Wynwood

One of the shows we visited during Art Basel Week was Affordable Care, curated by Flaunt Magazine. Held in the Mana Wynwood complex in Miami’s downtown district, this group exhbition explores the contradiction of the words “affordable” and “care”. This pairing of terms in the current world is sort of an oxymoron in a time of digital missives, healthcare glitches, and artistic free-for-all. The event brought together an interesting mix of artists working with diverse mediums, including photography, digital, performance art. The participants were Ben Jones, Melanie Pullen, […]
