Contests / Releases: Nick Walker – TMA Hong Kong / “Basking in the Glory”

Fans of Nick Walker (interviewed) can always count on two things – intricate stencil work and the iconic The Morning After (TMA) series where his signature “Vandal” runs amuck “beautifying” some of the most prominent cities around the globe. Some may remember East West Connect, the exhibition where Mr. Walker first unveiled (here) this site specific painting of the streets of Hong Kong, entitled Basking in the Glory. After two years, Nick finally makes good with his promise to release this as a 15 color silkscreen. Created in […]

Aside from the major fairs operating during Art Basel Week in Miami, there are countless art shows, launches and parties occurring during this tightly packed period. One unique building housed two notable ABMB events. The Pritzker Architecture Prize winning structure (designed by Herzog & de Neuron) held a great exhibition entitled PISTON HEAD: Artists Engage the Automobile. Basel Week Miami ’13: Untitled Art Fair

Yesterday, we visited one of the satellite fairs for Art Basel Week in Miami – the Untitled Art Fair. In its second year, the event expanded to include 90 galleries and not-for-profit spaces from 19 different countries. Instead of working with a selection committee, the fair uses a curatorial approach trusting the New York-based Omar Lopez-Chahoud to select participants to the invite-only showing. Take a look at some photos below… Discuss Art Basel Week Miami here.

Basel Week Miami ’13: Art Basel First Look (Part I)

Today marked the official opening of the Art Basel main fair at the Miami Beach Convention Center, but yesterday was the exclusive First Choice & Vernissage where a majority of the high profile buying action took place. Basel Week Miami ’13 / Studio Visits: Faile & Bast – “Deluxx Fluxx”

AM recently paid a visit to Faile’s Brooklyn hideout to take a closer look at their collaborative project with Bast – a nostalgic arcade-based exhibition entitled Deluxx Fluxx. Set to open tonight in South Beach (1604 Washington Blvd.), with sponsorship by Perrier, this marks version 3.0 for this mind blowing showcase of old school arcade games, foosball, and now they’ve added specially crafted pinball machines to bring back the sensory addictions of the 70s & 80s. (Check out version 1.0 in London & version 2.0 in NYC) […]

Openings: Daniel Arsham x Pharrell Williams @ The Standard East

Just this passed September 11th, New York-based artist Daniel Arsham and music producer Pharrell Williams unveiled their first collaborative endeavor at The Standard East Village Hotel in New York City. The result of their joint venture materialized as four re-creations of a Casino MT-500 keyboard, which is the first instrument on which Pharrell ever created music on. Like previous work that Arsham has done, the sculptures (made from different materials which included crystal, volcanic ash, and steel) are created to look like found artifacts that […]

Openings: Julia Chiang – “That Side, This Side, No Side” @ Bill Brady KC

Hailing from New York, Julia Chiang immerses the Midwest this fall with her work via Kansas City’s Bill Brady Gallery. Upon entry to the showspace, you are welcomed by several large “burst” paintings (seen in our studio visit) drawing you directly into the voided spaces within them. Chiang also shows off some new pieces consisting of large scale “fence” paintings alongside her more familiar glazed ceramic “drops” surrounding the space like altars. Julia keeps your attention and eyes confused with “A Word, Your Word #1,2” where she […]

Openings: Aurel Schmidt – “Fruits” @ 200 Stanton

Last weekend, Aurel Schmidt opened a new showing in New York at 200 Stanton Street that will run through the rest of the month. Entitled Fruits, the body of work on display revisits some of the provocative imagery she is known for with a series of hybrids made from plant and human body parts. With Jeffrey Deitch on hand, attendees took time to wrap their minds around Schmidt’s mutant creations. Take a look at more photos below… Discuss Aurel Schmidt here.
