Openings: “Whispers” @ Gallery 1988 (SF)

AM met up recently with Roland Tamayo (interviewed) at the opening of “Whispers,” a four person group show at Gallery 1988 in SF. He graciously showed us his new body of work with his signature marine life hybrids, this time painted on a white background. On Thursday night, Tomokazu “Matsu” Matsuyama (interviewed) opened his latest solo show, “In Case You’re Lost”, at San Francisco’s Frey Norris. The vibrant collection of paintings, sculptures, and installations, consisting of what we affectionately call the “2.0” era of Matsu’s exciting career, were welcomed by the enthusiastic bay area crowd. Openings: David Choe – “Character Assassination” @ Fifty24SF

David Choe opened his latest show, “Character Assassination” last Thursday night at FIFTY24SF. Choe, who has deep ties with both the Bay Area, as well as the Upper Playground family, brought an incredibly large turnout for his long awaited SF return. AM swung by David Choe’s satellite studio for a visit as the artist was preparing for his upcoming show at FIFTY24SF. Choe, who lives and works in New York City, has deep roots with both Los Angeles and the Bay Area and has maintained a makeshift studio a half hour south of San Francisco for the past two years. Openings: Alex Prager – “Week-end” @ Yancey Richardson and M+B

Alex Prager’s third installment of her trilogy on Valley life, “Week-End” opens today, January 30th, in Los Angeles at M+B Gallery while the New York showing at Yancey Richardson will continue till the 20th of February. Whereas her two previous shows, “Polyester” and “The Big Valley” respectively presented the glamor of vintage suburban life and it’s gradual deterioration, “Week-End” is a dark look into the lives of her subjects as their world finally unfurls. Releases: “Help Haiti” @ Stolenspace

Photographer Jeff Antebi has teamed up with London’s StolenSpace gallery to launch an online fundraiser for the people of Haiti. Antebi visited Haiti twice last year (you can read his experiences here) and will be releasing editioned prints of his photography to help raise funds for Oxfam and Doctors Without Borders. The prints are limited to runs of 150, are priced at a very affordable $64.50 each and are available through StolenSpace. Couple more photos after the jump.

Following our studio visit with Mike Shine last week (here), AM headed down to San Francisco to check out the fruits of his recent labors for SFMoMA‘s 75th Anniversary. After visiting Mike Shine’s outdoor carnival for SFMoMA‘s 75th Anniversary, AM ducked inside to catch one last look at Barry McGee’s massive clustered installation (previewed). Consisting of hundreds of drawings, personal pictures and patented patterns, McGee’s exhibit truly conveyed the multi-faceted breadth of his works. Morgan Slade opened his new show, “Fist of Fear, Touch of Death” last weekend at San Francisco’s Shooting Gallery. Featuring ten new large scale photographs, Morgan’s latest body of work is most striking and provided a great introduction of his work to the Bay Area. His subjects, faceless models donning football helmets, stormtrooper masks, and mascot heads, pose playfully though it’s their anonymity and resulting lack of true beauty that perhaps grants such freedoms as modern day morettas.
