Openings: Futura – “NEW HORIZONS” @ Library Street Collective

Last weekend, Library Street Collective in Detroit hosting the opening for Futura latest solo show entitled NEW HORIZONS. Along with all new paintings that features some of the graffiti legend’s signature abstract color studies with gyroscopic structures as well as his old school pointman characters, new large-scale pieces were prepared for the outdoor space in BELT Alley for the PUBLIC MATTER series of works. Previews: Evah Fan – “Weird View, Weird Few” @ Land Gallery

On June 24th, Land Gallery in Portland will be opening a new show entitled Weird View, Weird Few from Evah Fan. The Oakland based illustrator and artist’s gouache paintings often feature her eclectic cast of human and animal characters in unusual configurations, position, and situations, all rendered in her flat, multicolored style. Streets: Phlegm // Cities of Hope (Manchester)

Last month, nine artist headed to Manchester in the UK to participate in Cities of Hope, a project put together by Vestige, a not for profit social justice organization that uses the arts to inspire action on the social issues. Tom Sachs’ current exhibition (through July 24) is unprecedented in the 30 year history of the Noguchi Museum in that he is the first artist to be awarded a solo at the institution other than the original founder. Previews: Edwin Ushiro – “Capturing What Still Glimmers” @ Giant Robot 2

Tomorrow night at Giant Robot 2 in Los Angeles, Edwin Ushiro (interviewed) will be opening a new solo show entitled Capturing What Still Glimmers. Employing a laborious and unique technique (mark making and painting, then scanning and outputting to acrylic, Lucite or Plexiglass and then painted once again), the locally based artist is able to achieve a luminosity and ethereal quality to his work. The dream-like effect only enhances the nostalgic feel to his imagery as it harkens back to the experiences of his youth and the myths of Hawaii where he once resided. […]

Showing: Boris “Delta” Tellegan @ Rose Beton Festival

With the focus of the Rose Beton Festival in Toulouse this year on graffiti, artists Craig Costello, Futura, Mist, Tilt, and Boris Tellegen were asked to create installations at the Musee des Abattoirs in an exhibition entitled EPOXY. For his part, Tellegen (otherwise known as DELTA), contributed a sculpture, small painting and associated wall mural for the event. The highlight of course was the robot like sculpture, created in the architecturally-informed abstract style the Dutch artist perfected on the streets of Amsterdam. Previews: Andreas Englund @ Ramhuset

After completing a clever two wall mural in Berlin, Andreas England is getting ready to open a solo show on June 17th at Ramhuset in his hometown. The Swedish artist has prepared some of the humorous oil paintings depicting the everyday life of an anonymous superhero that he is known for, including a series he calls Superfly. You can also see some work at Restaurant Smak in Falun all summer. Streets: Mars-1 x Curiot (Nashville)

Last week in Tennessee, Mars-1 (featured) & Curiot decided to work on a mural together for the Nashville Walls Project. Located at the new Nashville Sounds Baseball Park and sponsored by Gibson Custom Division, the new piece sees Curiot adapt his style to mesh nicely with Martinez’s organic otherworldly imagery. They had met briefly before Nashville, but had never worked together but based on this result, they should definitely consider more collaborations in the future. Upcoming: Andy Kehoe – “Fantastical Romanticism” @ Jonathan LeVine Gallery

On June 25th, a solo show from Andy Kehoe will open at New York’s Jonathan LeVine Gallery. The new body of work from the Pittsburgh-based artist entitled Fantastical Romanticism has been in-progress for at least a year now so we are anxious to see what new ideas he has been working on. Those who attend the opening can expect to see more of his mystical creatures in Autumn-tinged natural settings, painted with a technique that gives the work dimensionality. Discuss Andy Kehoe here.

Releases: Gary Baseman x Coach Hand Painted Jackets & Totes

Since we first reported (in 2014) on Gary Baseman (interviewed) and his work with Coach, the American luxury fashion company has certainly further expanded their collaboration with the Los Angeles-based artist. One of the more recent spinoffs are a set of 10 unique hand-painted jackets & totes that have become available. These wearable art pieces were created to celebrate Baseman’s new Collaboration Collection with Stuart Vevers, the Creative Director of Coach. Discuss Gary Baseman here.
