Age of Empire, a new solo from Andrew Schoultz opened last week at Joshua Liner Gallery in New York. The exhibition features painting and work on paper referencing patterns in history like war, natural disasters, and globalization as well as social, political, and economic crises. The detailed pieces included in the show are his instantly recognizable collage – like compositions, filled with chaotic explosions of color and imagery, and are accompanied by a site-specific installation. Recap: David Choe // Igloo Hong (Morocco) – Part I

Last month, David Choe (featured) led a group of artists into the wilds of Morocco on another Igloo Hong funded project (also see Cambodia). Included on the trip to Marrakech were repeat attendees El Mac & Andrew Hem along with newcomers Mars-1, Aaron Horkey, and DVS-1. Previews: Peter Ferguson – “Lifeboats of a Sinking Witch” @ Roq La Rue

The evening of May 5th, Peter Ferguson’s Lifeboats of a Sinking Witch will open at Roq La Rue in Seattle. As per his usual aesthetic, the Canadian artist has prepared a series of oil paintings painted in a traditional manner that evoke early 20th century small town Americana. On closer examination, the subject matter is what distinguishes his work from the classics with fantastical and surreal elements. Coming up on May 5th, An American Astronaut In London will open at StolenSpace, a new exhibition from Scott Listfield. For his first solo in London, the American artist has created a fresh collection of paintings featuring his signature astronaut in an alternate version of the British capital, “left seemingly abandoned in the mid 90’s, covered in graffiti, and sprinkled with band posters from prominent British bands of 20 years ago.” Fans should stop by before the end of the month as the showing closes on May 29th. Releases: Tim Doyle – “I’m No Body” Prints

May 4th or May the Fourth Be With You Day if you will, Spoke Art will be continuing their annual tradition of releasing Star Wars related limited editions. This year, Tim Doyle will be offering up a day and night version of his I’m No Body prints inspired by Rey in The Force Awakens. Showing: Marilyn Minter – “Pretty/Dirty” @ Orange County Museum of Art

Earlier this month, Marilyn Minter opened a new show at the Orange County Museum of Art entitled Pretty/Dirty. The retrospective features over 25 paintings made between 1976 and 2015, three video works, and several photographs that highlight the American artist’s focus on society’s obsession with feminine beauty. Included are her iconic and lush works that focus on various eroticized parts of the female body like the feet, lips, and eyes. The exhibition will be on view through July 10th. Andreas Englund – “Coffee Break” @ Grand Central Station (Stockholm)

Last week at Stockholm’s Grand Central Station, a new mural from Andreas Englund took shape on the second floor. Commissioned by No18, a business hotel opening in May, the piece painted on the 8 x 3 meter wall features a scene which includes one of the superhero characters that the Swedish artist is known for. In this case, he’s taking a breather with a cup of coffee after dispatching some bad guys. Discuss Andreas Englund here.

Previews: Matthew Grabelsky – “Underground” @ Thinkspace Gallery

Starting on Saturday night (April 30th) at Thinkspace, the paintings of Matthew Grabelsky will be on display in the project room of the Culver City gallery. Raised in NYC, the Los Angeles-based artist chooses a setting for his scenes that is familiar to him – the subway. Underground features a body of work that includes animals commuting on the subway trains, usually with human companions, like it was an everyday occurrence. Streets: El Mac – “Desert Rose” @ Mesa Contemporary Arts Museum

The Mesa Contemporary Arts Museum in Arizona recently commissioned gifted muralist El Mac to create a piece on one of their concrete exterior walls. Painted in the Los Angeles-based artist’s unique rippled style of applying spray paint, Desert Rose depicts one of his good friends and features some background designs at the top by a local Mesa resident and graffiti artist from the early 90’s – Mando Rascón.
