Upcoming: 2nd Annual “Ema Show” @ Hatos Bar (Tokyo)

Starting on February 13th, a show organized by Hellion Gallery will be showing in Tokyo at the Hatos Bar. It’s appropriate that the 2nd annual Ema Show will start in Japan as the concept was to have artists paint the small wooden plaques on which Shinto worshipers write their prayers or wishes. POW! WOW! Hawaii ’16 / Showing: “Exploring The New Contemporary Movement” @ Honolulu Museum of Art School

Over the weekend, POW! WOW! Hawaii kicked off the festivities with a show curated by Thinkspace at the Honolulu Museum of Art School entitled Exploring The New Contemporary Movement, something they have done for the last two years before this (see 2015 & 2014). As in the past, artists were asked to contribute works that conform to a certain format, leading to a visually congruent and display of artworks. Streets: Nychos (Bangkok)

After a look earlier this week at what ROA painted for the BUKRUK Urban Arts Festival in Thailand, here now is a look at Nychos’ contribution. Taking inspiration from the Bangkok heat, the Austrian street artist painted a rubber ducky on meltdown, of course with the insides revealed with his usual aesthetic. Releases: Yoskay Yamamoto – “Sunny Flower” Series

Several days ago, Yoskay Yamamoto (interviewed) released more iterations of his “Sunny Flower” series. The potted blooms are customized with the Los Angeles-based artist’s signature facial features and take inspiration from his job during college was delivering bouquets in Santa Barbara. With Chinese New Year coming up on Monday, interTrend in Long Beach has teamed up with James Jean (interviewed) for an interactive installation to celebrate the occasion. The project centers around the red envelopes given out around the holidays by families for good luck. In this case, they have been secured to the front of the company’s building (228 E. Tomorrow (February 7th) will mark the third time Thinkspace has curated a show in association with POW! WOW! Hawaii at the Honolulu Museum of Art School (see 2015 & 2014). Today at the Hudson River Museum, sculptor Thomas Doyle is opening a new show entitled If The Creek Don’t Rise. The first museum solo for the Westchester County-based artist will feature more of his signature miniatures that center on the suburban home and the families that occupy them, often threatened by chaos and calamity – known and unknown. Openings: Linnea Strid – “Love Me When I’m Gone” @ Thinkspace Gallery

Last month, the Thinkspace Gallery in Culver City kicked off the new art year with Linnea Strid as one of the featured artists. Love Me When I’m Gone filled the project room space with the Swedish artist’s hyperrealistic paintings, portraiture accented by the subjects interaction with water whether that be submerged or enjoying a shower. Ai Weiwei Poses As Drowned Syrian Child Alan Kurdi

The disturbing photo of the Syrian child Alan Kurdi laying drowned on the beach has become an a rallying point for those concerned about the refugee crisis. Chinese artist and dissident Ai Weiwei recently posed as the boy for a photograph shot by Rohit Chawla for an upcoming issue of one of India’s largest news publications – India Today. Openings: Hajime Sorayama @ NANZUKA Gallery

Last weekend in Tokyo, renowned creator of the “sexy robot” Hajime Sorayama opened a solo show at NANZUKA Gallery.
