The exhibition showed off a wide range of works from the Patrick’s including their  Temple project that first made its appearance for PortugalArte ‘10, prayer wheels, large scale paintings, and more pieces all influenced by “a wide variety of sources, including American quilts, folk and Native American art, religious architecture, pulp magazines, comic books, sci-fi movie posters, adult entertainment advertisements, and storefront typography.” Included was also a revival of the Deluxx Fluxx Arcade (more on this […]

Recap: Edwin Ushiro – “The Study of Life as Things” @ Giant Robot 2

We stopped Giant Robot 2 in Los Angeles earlier this week to see the solo from Edwin Ushiro (interviewed) who had a wonderful series of drawings on display made from ballpoint pen, markers, pens, color pencils and graphite. Perhaps it’s the translucent paper used for these new pieces, but the translucent and ethereal look draws the viewer in for a second look to try and decipher how the Los Angeles-based artist achieves the effect. This transparency and glowing look would have been familiar to fans of his larger paintings, a […]

Upcoming: Revok – “Revok” @ Ruttkowski;68

On August 14th, Ruttkowski;68 in Cologne, Germany will be welcoming back Jason William aka REVOK for another solo. The eponymously named exhibition continues the line of work seen in his Los Angeles show earlier this year (covered), and will follow the graffiti artist as he “goes beyond the self to examine perceptions of consciousness and unconsciousness.” This continues to be expressed in the form of increasingly complex assemblages formed from precisely cut pieces of wood that draw their influences from op-art, traditional folk pattern, and optical illusion elements. Discuss Revok […]

Showing: Axel Void – “Sehnsucht” @ BC Gallery

Currently at BC Gallery in Berlin, Axel Void has a series of provocative works on display entitled Sehnsucht. The solo show from the Miami-based artist consists mainly of small and large paintings featuring portraits of people with plastic wrapped around their heads as well as some videos (sample here). The idea of the exhibition is to explore the idea of mundanity and the pursuit of purpose in our life, also referenced by the title of the show which comes from the German noun translated as longing, yearning, or craving or in a wider sense […]

Studio Visits: Yoskay Yamamoto

Earlier this week, AM stopped by the studio of Yoskay Yamamoto (interviewed) to see what he has been up to and what he has planned for the future. Along with picking up some of the whimsical Pothead plant holders he is producing through Sunny Side Up Studio, we also enjoyed seeing some of the new paintings he has been working on – many sunsets and polka dots in a beautiful new color palette. Those in Los Angeles can see these pieces at the upcoming Giant Robot Biennale at the Japanese […]

Fans around the world were delighted to hear last month that Studio Ghibli founder Hayao Miyazaki will be working on a ten minute short that will screen exclusively at the Studio Ghibli museum in Japan. His son Goro Miyazaki revealed that his father is bored maintaining the museum and wants to keep busy working on a new three year project that will feature a 3D animation about a caterpillar named Boro. Hopefully this means the man known for producing the highest quality traditional hand-drawn animation will […]
