Previews: Ariel DeAndrea – “Chasing the Current” @ Thinkspace

On Saturday, May 23rd, Thinkspace will be opening a solo show from Ariel DeAndrea entitled Chasing the Current. Her subject matter of choice for her oil paintings are paper cranes floating in bodies of water, referenced from photos she takes herself and derived from her origami skills (you can get a good idea of her process in the video below). This obsession with paper cranes started in early childhood, inspired by hearing that if you folded 1,000 cranes, you could make a wish. Learn more about this […]

Streets: El Mac – “Ars et Scientia” (Boston)

After recovering from a period of illness, the talented El Mac is taking advantage of his improved health to do what he loves best – spread his imagery via public art. His latest effort entitled Ars et Scientia was recently painted in Boston at Northeastern University on the facade of Meserve Hall, which was built in 1893. By coincidence, the Los Angeles-based artist’s father went to the university and studied Engineering where he met his mother who was going to MassArt. So the mural, which uses El Mac’s wife Kim as […]

Previews: “Product Displacement” @ CHG Circa

This Saturday, May 23rd, CHG Circa in Culver City will be opening a group show entitled Product Displacement. Participants were asked to consider the “interruption” of the media and arts by the insertion of commercial advertising when creating a piece for the show. Much like the invasion of consumerism into our everyday lives, brands and products have invaded these artist’s works. The roster includes Andrew Brandou, Ben Frost, Brandi Milne, Brian Donnelly, Buff Monster, Bumblebeelovesyou, Mikael Brandup, Carlos Ramos, Eric Joyner, Greg Gossel, Luke Chueh, Michael Mararian, […]

Showing: Aryz – “PARAL•LEL” (Los Angeles Popup)

Last month, PARAL•LEL opened in Los Angeles (viewings are by appointment only through May 31st), a pop up showing from prolific street artist Aryz. The new body of work touches on some of the surreal scenes seen in the Barcelona-based artist’s public murals including skeletal forms, repeating motifs / patterns, and still life inspired imagery. Along with these paintings rendered in his distinct ghostly aesthetic and color palette, there was also a truck custom covered in his work seen outside. Discuss Aryz here.

Previews / Streets: Shepard Fairey – “Printed Matters” @ Library Street Collective (Detroit)

As mentioned, this Friday night, May 22nd, Shepard Fairey (featured) will be opening his solo entitled Printed Matters at Library Street Collective in Detroit. As you can see from the photos here, Mr. Obey has already made his way to the Motor City where he is hard at work putting the finishing touches on pieces for the exhibition. While there, he is also of course working on various murals, one of which was finished in the alleyway behind the gallery for their the Belt series of permanent pieces. Also now in […]

This Saturday night, May 23rd, Greg “Craola” Simkins (featured) will be opening another solo show at KP Projects // MKG in Los Angeles. Entitled Where Am I, the name of the show is a nod to his graffiti roots as part of the WAI crew as well as a reaction to experiencing the fantastical worlds that the Los Angeles based artist is so adept at creating. He further states – “There is a point during our lifetime when we lose our childhood excitement and curiosities, and become infected with […]
