SXSW ’15: Tom Sachs

One of the art-related activities while in town for South by Southwest this year is taking advantage of multiple opportunities to enjoy Tom Sachs’ work. Presently at Backslash in Paris (through March 28th) is a show entitled Current from Boris “Delta” Tellegen. The Dutch artist’s second exhibition with the gallery features a collection of work inspired by the movement and unbroken activity the current, whether it be electrical in nature or in the ocean. The geometrical and architecturally inclined pieces on display range from large assemblages to smaller pieces on paper, a good cross section of work from the artist whose roots lie in graffiti. It seems that POW! WOW! Hawaii gets more ambitious each year with the plethora of quality local and international artists participating growing as a result. Releases: Von – “Skull 02” Print

Available though the end of today, March 15th (UK time), is a new print from Von (interviewed) entitled Skull 02. The A3 sized release is a timed edition with final run determined by demand and costs £20. Featuring some of the avian motifs that the UK-based artist and illustrator is known for, the imagery flocks together with some flowers just right to form a skull. But it here. Discuss Von here.

Upcoming: Nick Walker – “Vicious Beauty” @ Galerie Brugier-Rigail

Set to land in Paris on March 19th, Nick Walker (interviewed) will be opening a solo show entitled Vicious Beauty at Galerie Brugier-Rigail. Street art fans in the City of Light are certainly no strangers to the work of the Bristol-based artist as the capital city is only a short trip across the Channel, making it easily accessible for the Vandal (examples here & here). Likewise, Walker’s famous character will be making an appearance indoors for the exhibition and no doubt outdoors in the wild as well. Discuss Nick Walker here.

James Jean – “Psychic Temple” Library Project (Part I)

It looks like the fabrication is finally underway for the Psychic Temple project for interTrend in Long Beach, a collaboration between artist James Jean (interviewed) and architect Brandon Shigeta. The amazing library for the communication company that specializes in helping corporate America to target Asian Americans will feature the imagery of Jean carved into the backs of an integrated series of bookshelves. Streets: RISK (Los Angeles)

The offices of Rock Paper Scissors, a post production company located on the Westside recently had the locally-based RISK work on two walls for them. The building had quite a bit of history associated with it as he and other graffiti artists had painted it 24 years ago when it was owned by Sylvester Stallone. Streets: Usugrow (Marrakech)

Last month, the facade of the well known Cafe Des Epices in Marrakech, Morocco was painted over with the street calligraphy of Usugrow. Curated by Valerie Liais du Rocher of Studio IWA with support from Upper Playground, the Japanese artist left his mark in the heart of the Medina at in Rahba Kedima spice square covering one side of the rooftop structure with his signature script.
