Jen Stark For Miami International Airport

Versatile artist Jen Stark certainly kept busy with her art visible at various venues during Basel Week Miami, including showing at the Untitled. art fair (covered). Before leaving town, she also completed a large scale public mural at the Miami International Airport located at Terminal D & E (3rd level), just off the moving skywalk. It’s a permanent installation so next time you are in town, make sure you stop by. Photo credit: Peter Vahan. Discuss Jen Stark here.

Releases: Yoshitomo Nara – “Drawings: 1984-2013” Book

Published in conjunction with his amazing recent showing (covered) at Blum & Poe in Los Angeles, Drawings: 1984-2013 is the latest book in a long line of publications from Yoshitomo Nara. Those that attended that exhibition may remember an intriguing chronological survey of the Japanese artist’s drawings in the upstairs gallery which showed the evolution of his imagery over the years. Fans can now experience some of this themselves in this 240 page volume packed with “reproductions of early works never publicly exhibited and omitted from the […]

Upcoming: KMNDZ – “I’d Rather Love You” @ Merry Karnowsky Gallery

After showing with Merry Karnowsky in 2012 (covered), Johnny Rodriguez (aka KMNDZ) will be back on February 7th with another solo show. I’d Rather Love You will feature imagery that we have come to love from the Los Angeles-based artist featuring an interplay of intricately detailed birds, bombs, flowers, jewels, numerology and other paraphernalia rendered in a rust-colored palette. In the works is also a massive 8 feet painting that will serve as the centerpiece of the exhibition. Discuss KMNDZ here.

Upcoming: “La Familia – 10 Years of Thinkspace”

Coming up on January 10th, Thinkspace in Los Angeles will be celebrating their 10 year anniversary with La Familia, a group exhibition featuring over 100 participants. Each artist will be creating a 10″ x 10″ piece on panel (provided by Trekell) like what Scott Listfield painted above – an intriguing post-apocalyptic look at the Culver City gallery where only their EINE painted roll down door survived. Other artists include Aaron Horkey, Aaron Nagel, Adam Caldwell, Alex Yanes, Alexis Diaz, Allison Sommers, Amanda Marie, Amy Sol, Ana […]

Basel Week Miami ’14 / Recap: Library Street Collective Group Show

While in town for Basel Week Miami, one of the exhibitions we enjoyed the most was put on by the Library Street Collective near Wynwood Walls. With a diverse list of artists involved including Revok, Shepard Fairey, Pose, Kelsey Brookes, Tristan Eaton, Smash137, Vhils, Hush, Sam Friedman, Maya Hayuk, Roids, Mad C, AJ Fosik, Cleon Peterson, Dave Kinsey, Hacer (seen above), Hense, Faith47, How & Nosm, and Swoon, fans had a chance to see a wide range of works. It looks like many of the artists contributed some prime pieces that […]

Upcoming: Colin Christian – “Trypophobia” @ Stephen Romano Gallery

With the new year soon upon us, it looks Colin Christian’s (interviewed) work will be taking a disturbing turn. Fans of the Florida-based artist can see the new direction themselves when Trypophobia opens on January 3rd at the Stephen Romano Gallery in New York. As the title, which means a pathological fear of holes suggests, a more grotesque series of sculptural pieces will be greeting collectors in contrast to Christian’s usual cosplay-themed and sometimes erotic work. Available at the exhibition will be a catalog with texts by Kris Kuksi, Allison Meier, and […]

Releases: James Jean – “Leonardo” Figure

For those that didn’t get what they wanted for Christmas, perhaps you might consider picking up the first Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles figure released by Good Smile. Created based off the imagery of James Jean (interviewed), Leonardo will be the first of the crime-fighting pizza lovers to be made available for pre-order. The other three will be released separately through 2015 with collectors who purchase all for receiving an exclusive limited edition aluminum art print from Jean. Via Toysrevil. Discuss James Jean here.

Recap: Taku Obata – “Bust a Move” @ Jonathan LeVine Gallery

Jonathan LeVine Gallery recently closed a show featuring the dynamic b-boy and b-girl wood sculptures created by Taku Obata. Entitled Bust a Move, the debut US solo exhibition from the Japanese artist draws from his own experiences as a breakdancer with his subjects frozen in poses and stances that everyone from that subculture recognizes. Also rounding out the body of work were a series of drawings and lithographs. Photo credit: Joe Russo & the gallery.

Upcoming: Anish Kapoor @ Versailles

Following in the footsteps of Takashi Murakami and Jeff Koons, another worthy giant in the contemporary art world will be putting his works on display in the unique historic setting – Anish Kapoor. Visitors to Palace of Versailles between June to October next year will be greeted by the British sculptor’s famous shiny geometric objects among other works in the rooms and grounds of the 17th century chateau. Recap: L’Atlas – “Transversal” @ Wunderkammern

Last month at Wunderkarmmern in Rome, L’Atlas unveiled a collection of new works entitled Transversal, featuring his signature maze-like aesthetic. The Paris-based street artist developed this unique style during an extended period of time in Morocco, Egypt and Syria where he studied with masters of all types of calligraphy. In the gallery setting, his work has since evolved to incorporate more geometric abstraction although his impeccable lifework is still present. While in town, he also created a mural for his fans.
