Streets: The London Police (Kentucky)

Recently, The London Police paid a visit to Covington, Kentucky for a public works project arranged by the BLDG gallery. The duo painted their iconic LADS characters alongside buildings and inside local business, leaving a trail of art for fans to follow. Upping the ante were pieces that they hid around town that “escaped” the main large-scale mural. Take a look at a sampling of these walls in the photos below… Photo credit: Chris Breeden. Upcoming: “The Baxter Collection” @ Roq La Rue

An unconventional exhibition is opening up at Roq La Rue next month featuring the work of Mark Ryden, Marion Peck, Audrey Kawasaki, Camille Rose Garcia, Lori Earley, Nicoletta Ceccoli, Liz McGrath, Ray Caesar, Glenn Barr, Donald Roller Wilson, Kukula, Ana Bagayan, Fuco Ueda, and Joe Sorren. Typically, secondary market pieces aren’t presented as a show at galleries, but the work available was of such quality (as you can see from the iconic Octogirls from Kawasaki above), that the Seattle showspace decided to make an exception. Stop […]

Streets: Kenny Scharf (Los Angeles)

After opening his show at Honor Fraser (covered) in Los Angeles as well as painting on the cars of his lucky fans in the area, Kenny Scharf (interviewed) returned to New York where he continued improving vehicles with his signature imagery. He seems to get around, as he was back in the City of Angels last week to create a new mural (arranged by Branded Arts) in Culver City. Head over to Davis Brothers’ Tire Pros yourself for a look if you are in town. Photo credit: Branded Arts. […]

Preview: Askew – “Entropy” @ Inner State Gallery

On August 23rd, the Inner State Gallery in Detroit will be hosting a solo show from Askew entitled Entropy. Presented by 1xRUN, the new exhibition from New Zealand’s best will feature a series of portraits based on his experiences visiting the Motor City and the desolate cityscape he observed. He states: “Detroit started this whole train of thought during my first visit in 2009. I think the metaphor of Entropy is throughout the world but extends to Detroit as well. The Entropy in Detroit’s case was human […]

Stop by yourself if you are in Chi-town as other artists like Bhakti Baxter, Jim Drain, Cody Hudson, Andrew Nigon, […]

Preview: “Calligraffiti: 1984-2013” @ Leila Heller Gallery

After word leaked that Jeffrey Deitch would be stepping down as the director of the LA MOCA, the art world has been watching to see what his plans were for the future. It sounds like first up will be a series of independent and curatorial projects in New York including a show he is involved with at the Leila Heller Gallery. Calligraffiti: 1984-2013 revisits the original exhibition curated by Deitch back in 1984, but with an expanded roster that juxtaposes the styles of mid-century abstract, graffiti, and calligraphic artists […]

Streets: JR – Inside Out/11M (Los Angeles)

After tipping you off last week to the fact that JR’s (interviewed) photobooth truck was in Los Angeles, we headed by for a look ourselves. The mobile photo units have been traveling the US (and the world) of late, spreading the French photographer and street artist’s Inside Out love. Follow their website or Instagram to stay up to date as to when they will be at a city near you. For additional pictures, check out Theonepointeight’s blog here. Upcoming: Saber – “Ugly American” @ The Outsiders (Newcastle)

It looks like the next showing for SABER (interviewed) after his big exhibition in New York (covered) earlier this year will be at The Outsiders in Newcastle – opening to the public on September 6th. Entitled Ugly American, the American graffiti artist’s European solo debut will feature urban depictions of both the American flag and of the Union Jack. He explains the show title as “a reference to the excesses, and foul nature, that some believe Americans possess. Obviously this has similarities to modern Britain too, but… I come […]
