Teaser: Victor Castillo – “Gameland” @ Merry Karnowsky Gallery (Los Angeles)

After his successful exhibition at Roq la Rue gallery in Seattle last year, Victor Castillo opens another show next month at Merry Karnowsky Gallery.  The title of the show “Gameland” refers to the landscapes in this body of work, to “lost paradise or the Promised Land having become a sinister playground.”  As always, there are ominious and political overtones to Castillo’s work, often painting children in “dark scenes where toys become weapons and cruelty replaces innocence.” We are looking forward to the Chilean (now based in Spain) artist’s first […]

Preview: Jonathan Viner – “Harem” @ Sloan Fine Art

A show that kinda snuck up on us, “Harem,” by Jonathan Viner, opens this Saturday at Sloan Fine Art.  This body of work is a collection of ten 12″ x 12″ paintings of young Russian women listening dreamily to music with high fidelity headphones.  Rendered perfectly by Viner, each appear to be in their own world, oblivious to their surroundings. More images after the jump…

Preview: Chris Berens – “White Ones” @ Jaski Art Gallery

Kirsten from Roq La Rue stopped by Amsterdam-based artist Chris Berens’ studio to get a look at what he’s been working on for his upcoming show at Jaski Art Gallery opening this weekend.  Entitled “White Ones,” this exhibition appears make use of “light tones, with each painting focusing on evoking a particular element, such as clouds, wind, snow, and mist.”  Included in this fantastic new body of work is the largest canvas piece yet for Berens (probably the one pictured above).  For those new to […]

Teaser: Todd Schorr – “American Surreal” @ San Jose Museum of Art

Todd Schorr just sent us the flyer for his first solo museum show “American Surreal,” set to open this weekend at the The San Jose Museum Of Art.  For those lucky enough to be in the area, by all means stop by, but for those who are planning to travel, you may want to wait until July 16th for the official opening event (sponsored by Hi-Fructose).  Schorr will be there in person to greet fans and sign copies of his newest book from Last Gasp […]

Streets: Conor Harrington x FAME Festival

Looks like Conor Harrington (interviewed) was the first one to get up in his usual awesome fashion in Italy for this year’s FAME Festival (teased). FAME, put on by Studio Cromie, brings a select group of street artists to the small southern Italian town of Grottaglie. Look for further updates as more murals go up. Via unurth. Discuss this show here. Discuss Conor Harrington here.

Releases: Sam Flores x Upper Playground – Dragon Boy

Sam Flores’ (interviewed) amazing Dragon Boy figure really impressed us when news broke of this collaboration with Upper Playground.  Flores’ took one of the best paintings from his Subliminal Projects show and transformed it into a three piece 10″ toy that was created for UP’s  10th anniversary and produced by The Loyal Subjects.  Limited to 500 pieces, this figure will drop early September but apparently the pre-order is sold out now. More pics after the jump.

Video: Vernissage – Basel Week Switzerland

Another great video walkthrough by Vernissage TV from Art Basel Switzerland.  If you can get past the videographer’s apparent shoe fetish, you will be able to get a good idea of the atmosphere as well as see some glimpses of the artwork.  For more photos check out our previous post. Preview: Stella Im Hultberg – “Memento Mori” @ Thinkspace Gallery

Stella Im Hultberg (interviewed) recently posted up some preview images from her upcoming July show “Momento Mori” at Thinkspace Gallery.  “Memento Mori” is a Latin phrase meaning “Remember You Shall Die,” typically used in reminding people of their own mortality, which should give us a little insight into this where Stella is going with this show.  From these initial pics, there appears to be a maturity to her canvas technique that making us excited about this new body of work. More after the jump.

Teaser: Korin Faught – “Echo” @ Corey Helford Gallery

Los Angeles artist Korin Faught’s second show at Corey Helford Gallery entitled “Echo” opens on June 27th.  Faught first came to our attention when we saw a haunting series of paintings that she describes as “…inspired by Puritan, Amish and other Christian fundamentalists.”  So, this new body of work came as somewhat of a surprise as she does not shy away from a more honest look at the human form. Still, we see Faught’s distinctive palette and style in these first glimpses of the show […]

Art Focus: Thomas Doyle x New York Times Magazine

An artist we recently fell in love with at the Culver City Artwalk, Thomas Doyle, was commissioned by the New York Times Magazine to create a sculpture for their “Infrastructure” issue. This issue, which hits newsstands today, focuses on architecture, a perfect fit for half of what Doyle does so well – create small scale replicas of different structures and buildings placed in terrariums. The other half of what he does well is what sets him apart from ordinary diorama makers – capturing human emotion […]
