Teaser: Mars-1 @ Jonathan Levine

As you can see from the large painting in the background, Mario Martinez aka Mars-1 has some pretty amazing things planned for his upcoming show at Jonathan Levine Gallery. His show “Nuclear Mystic” opening on February 21st is sure to feature his signature otherworldly landscapes, vibrant palette, and organic patterns. Image via Craola’s Blog. Discuss this show here.

Preview/Interviews: Andrew Hem @ Roq La Rue

Tomorrow, Andrew Hem’s joint show (teased) with Stella Im Hultberg opens at Roq La Rue gallery in Seattle. His new body of work features imagery from his past experiences including the magnificent cathedrals seen on a trip to Europe as well as the emotions he witnessed in the children he has seen on his travels struggling to fit into a culture in which they are not familiar with. He took time to answer some questions about his new show among other things… Read about this […]

Benefit: Street Art Awards x SHP Auction

Some interesting charity auctions are ending soon benefiting SHP (Single Homeless Project), a London-based charity working with people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness. If you recall, various street/urban artists donated some originals painted on records during the Street Art Awards last year, including Matt Small (above), Know Hope, SPQR, Grafter, Holly Thoburn, Rene Gagnon, Guy Denning, Case, and Dale Grimshaw.  More images after the jump.

Anthony Lister x Paris Hilton

We are sure you all remember this video from a while back where Paris Hilton endorses Anthony Lister’s (interviewed) work. The Australian artist, who opened a show last week, apparently had time to take that encounter and paint Hilton as a superhero. Turns out she loves it… Perhaps it will end up on her walls somehow? Discuss Anthony Lister here.

Preview: Bob Dob @ Billy Shire

Baby Tattooville alumni Bob Dob is opening what looks to be a surf culture themed show, not surpising as he grew up in Hermosa Beach.  The show opens Valentine’s Day at Billy Shire Fine Arts with a body of work featuring his familiar characters, birds, waves and of course, the ubiquitous and mischevious little devil – Luey.  Take a look at some paintings from the show after the jump.

Interviews: Jin Young Yu

If you remember, we were quite intrigued with Jin Young Yu’s transparent sculptures that were displayed at the Pulse Fair at Art Basel Miami last year. We were lucky enough to be able to interview her because of the efforts of AM friend Stella Im Hultberg (interviewed), who provided the translation for the Korean sculptor as well as added some questions of her own. Check out the interview after the jump.

Yoskay Yamamoto Video & Customs

Suilma Rodriguez sent us a nice video she took and edited of Yoskay Yamamoto’s Koibito’s release (covered) last month at Munky King. Since the release party, Yoskay has been busy preparing for his upcoming solo show in May. However, he still had time to work on some new customs of his Koibito figure… Pics after the jump.

Seen: Jeff Soto Talk & Book Signing

Jeff Soto gave an interesting talk along with a slideshow last night at the Riverside Art Museum to his strong fan base in the area.  He covered his graffiti roots, childhood, inspirations, and took the audience through a progression of his work.  It was very instructive to hear what was important (family, Riverside area, politics, etc) to Jeff in his painting, and to really understand the transitions and beginnings of his work.  Afterwards, he took time to sign books and chat with all his fans. Jose Parla Pottery

José Parlá’s recently posted up some images of of his trip to Japan while visiting the Kimura Family gallery where he has some pottery projects in progress.  There were some interesting pics of the kiln, tools, the process, and some previous completed items (similar to those seen in his Cristina Grajales show). More images after the jump…

Openings: Craola & Anthony Lister @ Fifty24SF

Greg “Craola” Simkins’ (interviewed) and Anthony Lister’s (interviewed) shows opened last night at Fifty24SF with both artists in attendance to greet adoring fans.  Simkins expanded on “still life” themes from his last two shows while Lister focused on different versions of a familiar image as well as painting photos of his friends. See all the opening pics after the jump.
