On a recent visit to the Bay Area, AM got to visit the Oakland studio of artist Brett Amory just as he was in full scale preparations for his upcoming exhibition Twenty-Four In San Francisco. San Francisco-based artist Ryan De La Hoz brings a hometown show to Four Barrel in SF this week in the shape of Welcome To Your Doom. We like the title of the show, as De La Hoz has used it as a slogan before for a T-Shirt under his Cool Try clothing label. One such shirt proudly hangs in our wardrobe. Opening on the same night as Space//Form in Portland, artist Mike Maxwell (pictured on the right above with Jocelyn Duke, Mark Dean Veca and Hellion owner Matt Wagner) curated a group exhibition at Hellion Gallery. There seems to be a whole lot of muralising going on around the Futurism 2.0 exhibition we previewed earlier this week with a host of out-of-town artists in London for the show (which opens on Thursday 27th September) such as Joker aka Jerry Inscoe from Transcend. Keep your eyes peeled for more action in the coming days. This collaboration between Joker, Shok-1 and Remi Rough works particularly well, and was completed over the last 2 days.

After a couple of false starts, AM finally got to see Karin Krommes‘ latest solo exhibition entitled Reign at Waterhouse & Dodd in London. Her beautifully layered paintings in oil and acrylic feature portraits of aircraft parts from discarded and abandoned planes. The principal series of Reign are four diptych presentations of ejector seats from fighter jets, rendered in so much beautiful detail that they feel almost as three-dimensional as the installation piece within the gallery of a Martin-Baker Mk2 housing a tree-filled landscape arrangement. One of our favourite UK exhibitions from 2011 was Kid Acne’s Kill Your Darlings retrospective at Sheffield Museum’s Millennium Gallery, where the artist first presented his Stabby Women film. The film had us hooked, and the B&W imagery captivated audiences in the gallery as his stabby women were brought to life with equal measures of heroism and vengeance. Mike Stilkey (interviewed) has just finished a 42 foot long installation at Downtown LA’s mural hotspot outside The Standard hotel and gave us a little background to the piece: ‘A homeless guy came by and told me he hadn’t seen anything like this since the zoo drop. I asked him what the zoo drop was and he said it was when all those planes and helicopters dropped animals out of the sky. Hence the title of the piece just had to be The Zoo Drop.’ Stilkey […]
