Openings: Cleon Peterson – ‘There is a War’ @ The Outsiders

Cleon Peterson recently brought his highly stylised and violent imagery to London for his first solo exhibition in the UK. There is a War opened at The Outsiders’ Soho gallery space on Thursday July 4th with a selection of  works from his Brinksman series as well as his wonderful tableaux street scenes so full of multi-dimensional blood drenched villainy. For many at the opening it was the first opportunity to see Cleon’s graphical (and also graphic) work in person, and a chance to absorb his technique over a large body of work. There […]

Openings: ‘Word Play’ @ Design Matters

A little while back we brought you a preview of some of the work for Word Play, hosted at Design Matters Gallery in Los Angeles. The premise of the exhibition excited us as the curated theme was based around text within art. The group exhibition was curated by Stephanie Chefas, of Platinum Cheese blog fame and features a variety of artists from very different backgrounds but all commonly using text in their work though a range of styles and mediums. Ben Venom (above), Shawn Huckins, Greg Lamarche, Gregory Siff, Meg Hitchcock, Meryl Pataky, and RERO all contributed […]

Streets: Remi Rough & Nawer (Poland)

We recently came across the Traffic Design Festival currently underway in Gdynia, Poland – in particular the wall that kicked off the street art event jammed out over a few days by Krakow based Nawer and Remi Rough, from London. The huge mural collaboration between the pair works well, with the architectural emphasis of the dividing lines created by Nawer sitting comfortably alongside Rough’s bold slabs of colour. The resultant piece is a strong showing of geometrically biased post / abstract graffiti. We have some pics courtesy of […]

Videos: Paul Insect & Sweet Toof – ‘Clowning Around’

Two notable London graffiti / street artists, Paul Insect & Sweet Toof have a long history of working collaboratively and jamming out walls together. Their latest collaboration is entitled Clowning Around. Check out the cool stop motion animated video they made of the piece coming together below… Discuss Paul Insect here. Discuss Sweet Toof here.

Showing: Petro ‘Hey You’ @ Bradbury & Blanchard

UK based graffiti artist Petro has been contributing to the depletion of the ozone layer for 25 years or so, and his instantly recognisable style is now on view in Sheffield gallery Bradbury & Blanchard. Hey You showcases Petro’s signature handstyle, lettering and drip-infused symbology and it’s good to see exhibitions like this being brought to the North of England by B&B – the gallery owners and curators are artists themselves, so watch out for more exiting shows in the future. In conjunction with the exhibition, […]

Previews: Cleon Peterson – ‘There is a War’ @ The Outsiders

Cleon Peterson‘s first UK solo exhibition is on the horizon, so get ready for some carnage Londoners! Peterson’s stories are told in a typically monochrome language, and show a world where violence reigns, interspersed with quirky black humour. His stylized bogeymen are metaphor of course for oppressors of all kinds rather than a straight up glorification of violent people carrying out violent acts. There is a War opens at The Outsiders Soho gallery space with a private view on Thursday July 4th and runs until August 3rd […]

Previews: “Word Play” @ Design Matters

If you’re a fan of text used within art, then you’ll be interested in the upcoming exhibit Word Play, hosted at Design Matters Gallery in Los Angeles. The group exhibition is curated by Stephanie Chefas, who writes the Platinum Cheese blog and features Shawn Huckins (above), Greg Lamarche, Gregory Siff, Meg Hitchcock, Meryl Pataky, Ben Venom, and RERO. The media used by this group varies as much as their individual stylings, with collage, paint, neon and textile based works all being represented. The unifying bond of course is […]

Studio Visits: Ryan Stewart Nault

Ryan Stewart Nault is on the verge of having his first solo exhibition at Portland’s Breeze Block Gallery. I’m a Stranger Here Myself will see the young Chicago-based painter unveiling a fresh body of work on the back of multiple group exhibitions throughout the United States and the also the UK. Nault has recently completed his BFA at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. He describes his work as harboring the effects of domestic comfort, which is evident throughout his past work, and transfers into this new body of […]

Previews: Sweet Toof & Rowdy – “Sweet Summer Solstice” @ The Looking Glass

Next week, two graffiti artists we follow here on AM come together for a two person show in Bristol. Rowdy and Sweet Toof need no introduction as their jams have been seen on the world stage for years individually, together as a twosom,e and also as part of their former guise within the Burning Candy crew. Sweet Summer Solstice opens on the longest day of the year, June 21st at Bristol arts venue The Looking Glass, with an opening party serving Sweet Toof punch and Crocktails. The exhibition runs […]

Releases: Kid Acne – ‘Council Pop’ (screen-printed 10 year anniversary edition)

Kid Acne’s coming back through like an amber gambler with the re-release of his 2003 album Council Pop in a special 10 year anniversary edition (has it really been 10 years?). AM readers will probably be more familiar with the graffiti / street art side of Kid Acne’s creative output, but if you haven’t heard his Yorkshire infused hip hop, then this could be an ideal intro to the world of Eddy Fresh. Streets ahead of his debut Rap Traffic, Council Pop lacks some of the […]
