Following his last solo exhibition Altered State, South African born & UK based artist Mantis opens his latest endeavour Epoch tonight (Thursday 10th October) at East London’s Hoxton Gallery. The 2013 British Ceramics Biennial which opened in Stoke-on-Trent on 28 September, celebrates the best in contemporary ceramics through a six-week programme of exhibitions, installations and events. One of the installations, Take Stock by Lawrence Epps, has been created from 12,000 ceramic office workers, which visitors to the biennial will be invited to take away with them. We’ve amassed quite the collection of books by London based graffiti dude / artist / muralist Remi Rough over time, and it looks like our shelves will be getting another addition pretty soon. #roughsketches is a 124 page book of blackbook drawings and sketches from 1996 to 2013, and it will be available in a limited edition of 100 numbered and signed copies, direct from Remi’s online store on Friday 11th October. Loakal Gallery’s next exhibition looks to be an interesting one. The Oakland space is hosting a solo exhibition by Terry Furry entitled Intimate Strangers. The subject matter of the exhibition contains voyeuristic portraits graphically rendered in oils. The paintings are framed as snapshots as if captured and exchanged on cell phones and are reminiscent of the aesthetic of the so called ‘selfie-culture’. Jud Bergeron’s current exhibition Becoming carries its special little story on how it came to be. Funded by a recent kickstarter campaign to facilitate the casting of pieces such as Quack-Quack – the large scale bronze and mixed media sculpture of an atom bomb explosion of rubber duckies emanating from a pin-striped child’s pedal car, Bergeron used the crowd-funding route to deal with the huge upfront costs of mounting such an ambitious sculptural exhibition. Earlier this month Max Kauffman opened his solo exhibition Your Vulnerability Makes You Beautiful at Loakal Gallery in Oakland.
