Showing: Alex Israel @ The Huntington

Currently at The Huntington in Los Angeles, a selection of works from Alex Israel has been inserted throughout the the historic institution’s European art collection. The intriguing mix of new and old brings to mind exhibitions in the past like KAWS at the PAFA or like the turns Koons, Murakami, and Kapoor took at Versailles. For the exhibition, the locally-based artist has carefully and seamlessly placed 16 paintings and sculptures as well as two site-specific murals throughout the gallery’s two stories, contrasting his references to the cult of celebrity […]

Previews: Allison Schulnik – “Hoof” @ Mark Moore Gallery

Set to open January 9th at Mark Moore Gallery, Hoof will be Allison Schulnik’s fourth solo with the Culver City-based showspace. Featuring a series of paintings and sculptures, the new body of work from the Los Angeles-based artist further expands her fascination with the “misfits, outcasts, and the misunderstood” into the mythological realm to include portraits of creatures such as centaurs & unicorns. Her thick impasto pieces are heavily textured and a natural extension to the claymation work seen in her amazing videos which are what drew our […]

Previews: Sam Friedman & Josh Sperling – “From the Cradle to the Grave” @ Joshua Liner Gallery

Tomorrow night (January 7th) at the Joshua Liner Gallery, a joint exhibition from Sam Friedman & Josh Sperling will open its doors to the public. Friedman will be be presenting his abstractions inspired by the natural world, continuing his series of grayscale works which we quite like, along with introducing some more hued paintings. In contrast to this, Sperling will be contributing some canvas pieces that are almost like sculptures with his layered plywood technique as well as a wall installation. The title of the show, From the […]

Previews: Li Hongbo – “Textbooks” @ Klein Sun Gallery

Tomorrow night (January 7th) in New York, the Klein Sun will be hosting a new solo in their south gallery from Li Hongbo entitled Textbooks. The new body of work from the Beijing-based artist builds on his previous exhibition there (see 2014) with a new immersive installation built from binder clips, textbooks, and classroom materials. The Chinese artist known for his kinetic book sculptures will be further exploring the “influence of education in society, debating historical distortion and propaganda woven into classroom lessons across America and China” with […]

Recap: Ry David Bradley – “Not to be Digitized” @ Tristan Koenig

In December, Tristan Koenig held a special off-site project in Sydney of Ry David Bradley’s new two-sided paintings. The New York-based artist was recently intrigued by a hand written note Not to be Digitized on a cupboard within the New York Public Library’s “Pictures Collection” which contained things like prints, photographs, posters, postcards and illustrations from books, magazines, newspapers and classifieds. This got Bradley thinking about how the postcard still exists, despite its purpose being supplanted by modern forms of communications like social media. Seeing some parallels in the art of […]

Showing: Takashi Murakami – “500 Arhats” @ Mori Art Museum

Currently at the Mori Art Museum is Takashi Murakami’s The 500 Arhats, surprisingly his first solo show in Japan in over 14 years when it opened. Fans of the locally-based artist in Tokyo have been spoiled as of late as they were able to enjoy a concurrent show at Kaikai Kiki that closed late last year, but have no fear – the museum exhibition is open through March 6th. The major showing from founder of the Superflat movement features a series of sculptures and paintings that he was moved to create after […]

Tiffany Bozic – Apple Pencil // iPad Pro

After sharing James Jean’s work with the iPad Pro & Apple Pencil, we have another artist who has put in some work with the company’s Start Something New campaign. Tasked with “illustrating nature through its details,” the American artist created a piece entitled Herowana, a celebration of wildlife in Papua New Guinea. The San Francisco-based painter’s first foray into the digital realm was something she has been tempted with before but she never had time to try. Bozic is now one of 11 artists whose works […]

Art Focus: Trevor Wheatley

Our latest Art Focus feature introduces you to the singular work of Trevor Wheatley and his mix of sculptural skills, public art, and typography. Photos of the Toronto-based artist’s signage in the great outdoors can initially deceive you into thinking there is some photoshopping involved, but the slang terms and cultural references used are sculptural creations that show his mastery over a creative mix of materials. He explains his work as such – “Initially, I wanted to impose graphic one-liners on untouched environments. I started with the […]
