Previews: “Step and Repeat” @ The Geffen Contemporary at MOCA

Step and Repeat, MOCA’s annual celebration of performance art, comedy, poetry, live music, and other pleasant surprises, returns this Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The weekend-long celebration will take place at The Geffen Contemporary and will feature never been seen performances by Geo Wyeth, James Fauntleroy, Cali Thornhill Dewitt, and Juliana Huxtable, and other artists. Come and see other ways of experiencing art besides viewing paintings on the wall or objects on the floor.

It’s summertime and anticipation is growing for the next Hennessy VS cognac bottle with this year being the 250th anniversary for the world’s largest and most storied cognac maker. For this occasion, Ryan McGinness (featured) was selected to chair the design of their iconic VS silhouette. San Francisco’s Park Life will be hosting a July 15th opening for a collaborative exhibition between Francesco Igory Deiana and Atelier Pica Pica entitled Meeting On The Shore. Aside from showing together, the Italian born artist and Belgian art collective actually created the entire body of work together, which resulted in a coherent show. The title was a result of the fact that the artists never really met in person before they decided to collaborate and do this experimental project together. Coming up in December of this year, an interesting pairing of Andy Warhol and Ai Weiwei will open at the National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne before traveling to Pittsburgh’s Andy Warhol Museum in June of 2016. Continuing his long collaboration with Lazarides, Ian Francis (featured) recently returned to London for the opening of his new show at the gallery’s flagship Rathbone Place location. The Chosen Form of Your Destroyer consists of new series of mixed media works that explore the coexistence of beauty and destruction in society today, rendered in the British artist’s signature mix of abstract and photorealistic techniques utilizing oil, ink, acrylic, graphite and charcoal. Known of her undulating sculptural creations through the unconventional use of feathers, Kate MccGwire currently has some works on display at various locales. Some of her pieces are at the Royal West of England Academy in Bristol alongside work from Peter Randall-Page (through September 10th) – you can read more about it here. This weekend, a show co-curated by Andrew and Shawn Hosner of Los Angeles’ Thinkspace Gallery and Josef Zimmerman of the Fort Wayne Museum of Art will open at the museum. Entitled Invisible College, the group exhibition refers to the fact that many of the participants have found success outside of the traditional art educational model.
