Basel Week Miami ’14: Damien Hirst @ Paul Stolper Gallery

Mirroring an exhibition (covered) several months ago at the Paul Stolper Gallery in London was a display of Damien Hirst’s oversized pharmaceuticals at their Art Basel Miami booth. The Schizophrenogenesis works consist of sculptural renditions that are an extension of his pill cabinet pieces as well as his fascination with the medical field as well as screen prints. See all our coverage of Basel Week Miami here. Discuss Damien Hirst here.

Releases: Sid Vaga x Maya Hayuk – “The Pilar Project”

One of the releases coinciding with Basel Week Miami is this wicked project between Maya Hayuk and DJ / producer Sid Vaga. The idea behind this release was that “the best collaborations come from two voices that create a third, unique voice.” Known for creating art that is inspired by the neon lights and party culture, this is not the first time Hayuk has mixed art with music. The Brooklyn-based artist created an exclusive, limited edition record sleeve from her recently released and sold out silkscreen edition Multiverses #2. “The idea for this collaboration […]

Basel Week Miami ’14 / Openings: Art Basel (Part I)

After flying into Miami, AM headed straight to the main fair to see what the new year had to offer at Art Basel. With over 250 of the world’s most prestigious galleries participating and over 70,000 visitors each year, the sheer amount of art certainly cannot be encompassed in one article. Here is part I of our coverage with some snapshots of things that caught our eye like the impressive Urs Fischer installation at the Sadie Coles HQ booth mirroring the exhibition at the end of […]

Showing: Augustine Kofie – “Taking Shape” @ Openspace

Augustine Kofie is a West Coast artist who has been a pivotal part of the Los Angeles graffiti scene since the mid 90s. But, don’t let the “graffiti moniker” allow you to draw any conclusions, as Kofie is in a class of his own. Widely known for his love for drafting, his work is anything but conventional, bending and blurring the lines between what we think we know of high and lowbrow art, as well as the art of draftsmanship. His latest solo exhibition, titled Taking Shape, is showing […]

Openings: Phil Frost – “Intuitive Mathematics” @ Galeria Javier Lopez

Last week, fans of Phil Frost in Madrid saw the opening of Intuitive Mathematics, a solo showing at Galeria Javier Lopez and his first in Spain. Seen were large scale works as well as found objects that were painted over with his recognizable aesthetic, something he calls “intuitive perceptive portraiture.” Layers upon layers of typographical and geometric shapes flow in repeating patterns that he honed to perfection over time with mark-making on the streets. Showing: Adrian Falkner aka Smash137 – “Neue Farbe” @ Galerie Neuheisel

Adrian Falkner aka Smash137 recently opened his solo show on the 27th of November at Galerie Neuheisel in Saarbrücken, Germany. The artist that built his name by putting it up on pretty much every surface of his hometown of Basel, Switzerland from 1990 until 2005, introduced his new series of heavily abstract, graffiti inspired works titled Neue Farbe (New Color). The title of the show comes from his childhood idea he shared with his brother about inventing a new color. While every attempt ended in creating a shade of […]

Rewind: Nov 3 – Nov 30

It’s been a month since our last Rewind feature, so it’s time to round up some art related videos again that you may be interested in. First on our list this time is a trailer of an upcoming documentary (seen via Booooooom) about Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan and his provocative work. Release is scheduled for summer of 2015 and it looks to be a good one. Other notables videos seen below include: A Q&A with Adam Neate. A look at Futura’s solo show in Shanghai. Neckface, […]

José Parlá for One World Trade Center

Continuing to make his mark in New York with high profile projects (also see Barclays Center & BAM), José Parlá recently unveiled a new mural in the One World Trade Center. The 1776 feet tall building in Manhattan took 13 years of construction and cost $3.9 billion, and stands near where the Twin Towers collapsed after the terrorist attacks on 9/11. The locally based artist was the perfect choice in terms of his history in the area as well as the fact that the curatorial team was looking […]
