Openings: Kehinde Wiley / The World Stage: Israel @ The Jewish Museum (NYC)

Last month, Kehinde Wiley’s exhibition at The Jewish Museum of New York opened its doors to the public with a selection of large-scale paintings, including one in the museum’s permanent collection. The showing paired with some synergism the works from the Israel portion of the painter’s continuing The World Stage series (seen last year at Roberts & Tilton) with some of the traditional Jewish papercuts and textiles from institution’s collection. Last Saturday evening, Amsterdam-based artist Niels Shoe Meulman’s (NSM) exhibition Justified Scriptures opened at 941 Geary. The works in the show meshes his “calligraffiti” with repetition and abstract elements, to create what he describes as “Abstract Expressionism with a calligraphic origin.” This exhibition reflects the road he has traveled as an artist – starting out with being a graffiti legend 80’s, to later becoming a designer/typographer who eventually starts a design company and then gets into advertising. Armory Week ’12: Scope Art Fair

One of the mainstay satellite fairs during Armory Week is the Scope Art Fair. This year’s edition rocked a new location just blocks from the main Armory Art Show (here & here) and gained some fresh galleries go along with its revamped look. As with most fairs we caught works by artists from around the globe and we also ran into a few familiar faces to go along with the infusion of new blood. Check it out after the jump.

NASA recently released a video they call Perpetual Ocean which tracks all the ocean currents from around the world. The twist is the animation has a pretty cool Van Gogh inspired vibe and is billed as “every bit as turbulent as the Starry Night” (via Animal), Other notable videos include: Trailer for Roger Gastman’s Wall Writers. Art Focus: Peter Lippmann

For this week’s Art Focus, AM would like to introduce the photography of Peter Lippmann. Although he has produced some wonderful series of work on rotting fruit, destroyed cameras, remixes of master paintings, and more, we will be looking at his Paradise Parking shots. For this particular set of pics, the Paris-based American-born photographer features classic cars parked for the last time and subjected to the unrelenting forces of nature. Tomorrow night, March 31st, in Culver City, Natalia Fabia (interviewed) will be curating a show at the Corey Helford Gallery entitled Hookers. Drawing from her longstanding fascination with the world’s oldest profession, artists like Kent Williams, Michael Hussar, Phil Hale, Erik Sandberg, Saber, REVOK, and more have been instructed to produced similarly inspired work for the exhibition. After a showing in the UK and a refreshing vacation in Hawaii, Kelsey Brookes (featured) has returned to Cali to work on a fresh set of paintings. The new body of work is currently on display at Compound Project in Malibu and is entitled Meditations on Symmetry. Although the pieces still maintain the vibrancy and love for patterns seen in previously, Brookes seems to be exploring a more abstract side of his oeuvre. More photos after the jump…
