Viewpoints / Openings: Olek — “I do not expect to be a mother but I do expect to die alone” @ Tony’s Gallery, London

AM was at Tony’s Gallery in Shoreditch on Thursday to see the first UK solo show by Olek (set-up and teaser photos here). The New York-based artist has been making the most of her extended London visit, transforming the ground floor of the gallery into a domestic setting filled with crocheted furniture and other household items. Everything but the entrance area, the ceiling, and a couple of plants has been given a second skin. The combination of brightly-coloured yarn and Olek’s signature camouflage pattern means […]

Teaser: David Shrigley – “Brain Activity” @ Hayward Gallery

We are AM are pretty excited about the prospects of attending David Shrigley’s first major survey exhibition in the UK, entitled Brain Activity, opening this Wednesday at the Hayward Gallery in London. The last time we saw a large selection of pieces from the versatile British artist was at the 2010 Frieze Art Fair, where he was incidentally also drawing on people’s bodies in one of his infamous impromptu tattoo sessions, so the opportunity to peruse an even more substantial collection of his work will […]

Christopher Knight on the new Matthew Marks location in LA and its Ellsworth Kelly facade. Richard Jackson crashes a plane into a canvas as part of a PST performance. Marina Abramovic throws a silent party where participants wear lab coats and can’t talk. The Patrick Cariou vs. Richard Prince copyright case continues. Art Focus: Ethan Murrow

Boston-based Ethan Murrow works in large-scale graphite drawings and is the subject of our Art Focus for this week. The full time Graduate and Undergraduate Faculty in Painting at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Beantown bases his imagery on collaborative work with his wife, where she films, photographs and directs him in performances.  In fact, his short film Dust was an official selection of the 2008 New York Film Festival. Murrow has an upcoming show in April at the Obsolete Gallery […]

“Fresh Kills” @ Anonymous Gallery (Mexico)

The Anonymous Gallery kicked off their Mexico City location with a bang with a recently closed group show – Fresh Kills. The title of the showing refers to the 2,200 acres in New York known as Fresh Kills Landfill that will be converted to a huge public park over the course of the next 30 years. The transformation of what was formerly the world’s largest landfill into something beautiful is a metaphor for the type of work the artists in this show do – taking […]

Setup / Giveaway: Olek — “I do not expect to be a mother but I do expect to die alone” @ Tony’s Gallery, London

Olek is launching her first UK solo show this evening at Tony’s Gallery in East London. The wall-to-floor installation recreates living quarters, complete with bed, tables, picture frames and other domestic objects — all covered in brightly-coloured crochet. AM has been keeping track of progress over the last few weeks and we’re looking forward to seeing the finished result. The show’s title, “I do not expect to be a mother but I do expect to die alone”, quotes from an appliquéd blanket produced by Tracey […]
