Ai Weiwei Released by Chinese Authorities

After being detained since April 3rd, the Chinese state news agency, Xinhau, today reported Ai Weiwei has finally been released on bail “because of his good attitude in confessing his crimes.” China’s most well known artist and activist, who has long been an outspoken critic of domestic humanitarian policies and effectively foreshadowed his own dire fate in his last blog entry before it was taken down the government, spent almost three months – 81 days – behind closed doors on alleged “economic charges”, though one […]

Liu Bolin x Kenny Scharf Houston Mural

When we broke news of Liu Bolin new solo at Eli Klein Fine Art back in May, we also mentioned that the Beijing-based artist would be taking advantage of his time in New York to create a Hiding In New York series of works to be released later in the fall. Well, it looks like “The Invisible Man” has touched down ahead the June 29th show opening for a photo session in front of Kenny Scharf’s (interviewed) now famous Houston & Bowery mural. Kenny also stopped by to lend […]

Preview: Sea No Evil 2011

Time flies!  The annual Sea No Evil benefit auction ($10 donation required at the door) is fast approaching – in fact, it’s this Saturday, June 25th. It seems the lineup and art included in show just gets better each year (see 2010 and 2009), so you will want to be at the Riverside Municipal Auditorium starting at 6pm that night as She Wants Revenge will be playing and Captain Watson from the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society will be speaking. Well, the next artist that has been commissioned is Takashi Murakami to celebrate the summer solstice which lands on today, June 21st. Entitled The First Day of Summer, the superflat movement founder has decided to enlist the help of his Kaikai and Kiki characters as well as his multicolored flowers. These images were produced over a three month […]

Releases: “HEROES & VILLAINS”

According to our friend Amanda Erlanson, the long awaited HEROES & VILLAINS book has finally been released. In it, photographers Tatiana Wills and Roman Cho take snapshots of many of the artists we follow here on AM. Not only are the resulting portraits technically sound, the duo were able to capture the essence of each artist – for example, Shawn Barber (featured) and his tattoos, Tiffany Bozic and her bird, or SHAG (interviewed) in a modern retro setting. We’ve seen the publication in person and were quite […]

Teaser: Frank Gonzales @ Beals & Abbate Fine Art

A young artist we have had our eye on for some time, Frank Gonzales, is getting ready for a solo in Santa Fe, New Mexico at Beals & Abbate Fine Art. The New York-based artist is currently working on the new body of work in preparation for the September including the piece seen above. We like his addition of fragmentation and abstract elements to his love for nature that gives classic imagery a refreshing new take. More detailed shots after the jump…
