Openings: Kristen Schiele – “Elektra” @ Sloan Fine Art

Kristen Schiele’s solo show “Elektra” opened this past Wednesday evening at New York’s Sloan Fine Art. We love Kristen’s use of multiple mediums and her thrilling mixture of oil paint and screen print in her compositions featuring skewed architecture and a cast of 70’s femme noir characters. We recently interviewed Kristen just ahead of this show, and if you missed it first time around you can catch that here. More opening night pictures courtesy of Anna Ortt after the jump.

Openings – Kris Kuksi and Christy Langer “Meticulous Engagements” @ Shooting Gallery

AM recently attended the opening for Kris Kuksi and Christy Langer’s “Meticulous Engagements” (previewed) at the Shooting Gallery in San Francisco. Langer, who first caught our eye at Basel last year and is pictured above, brought a nice mix of large and small resin sculptures, examining the violence and fragility of nature. Kuksi’s works were as impressive as always and though we took plenty of detail pictures, they really need to be seen in person to be believed.  “Meticulous Engagements” ends in two days, the […]

Preview: Thomas Doyle – “Collateral Damage” @ Lebasse Projects

New York based artist, Thomas Doyle (featured), has a new body of work prepared for his show this weekend, April 24th, at Lebasse Projects entitled “Collateral Damage.” The appropriately named show features a series of exquisite sculptures of houses set in precariously impossible positions such as upside down and teetering on a cliff on all sides. Yet despite his captivating play on architecture, what draws collectors to Doyle’s work is his ability to capture the human condition and their emotions when thrown into environs that […]

We’ll have more as the show gets nearer, but for now, take a look at this in progress piece… Discuss Chloe Early here.

The show brought together a great level of variance in the outputs, mediums and techniques used by the artists involved. Read on for our take on the show, as well as our pictures from the opening after the […]

Studio Visits / Preview: David Choe – “Nothing to Declare” @ LAzarides Beverly Hills

Los Angeles, absence makes the heart grow founder… So, David Choe (featured), welcome home! After a six year hiatus from showing in LA, the man who paddle-boated down the Mississippi, safaried the Congo Jungle, was jailed in Japan, and once exhibited in an ice cream parlor, will be making his homecoming in the heart of Beverly Hills this April 23rd for an exhibition to blow the hinges off. AM had the pleasure of stopping by David Choe’s warehouse/studio earlier this week for a little visit […]

As hinted in our previous coverage of Tomokazu “Matsu” Matsuyama’s (interviewed) collaboration with Medicom, there is another surprise collaborator in this project: Nike. This very limited set contains the medicom bearbrick (covered), a slick NSW Sportsman Jacket and a newly designed Nike Tekapo Slide Sandal. Like the bearbrick, both the trench jacket and Tekapo sandal were specifically designed and accented by Matsu to complement the […]

Teaser: Shepard Fairey Mural for Deitch Projects

The famed mural space on Soho’s Houston Street is about to cycle on to the next artist. The last time that we checked in on the location, Os Gemeos had created a masterful work of street art (featured). That has all been buffed now in preparation for Shepard Fairey to hit this central spot with his own brand of urban beautification for his upcoming show at Deitch Projects. AM stopped by Shepard’s Studio Number Two on Friday (more on that later) and got a sneak peak […]
