On March 18th, Tomoo Gokita will be back at Tokyo’s Taka Ishii Gallery for his third solo that will include 15 new paintings. Holy Cow will be a chance for the artist to show how his work progressed in the last 5 years since his last show with the gallery. Currently at the GR Gallery location in New York, a group show featuring Felipe Pantone, Gilbert Hsiao, Nadia Costantini, and Sandi Renko is on view thru April 16th. On March 3rd, Kaikai Kiki Gallery in Motoazabu, Tokyo, opened a debut Japan solo exhibition by American artist Austin Lee. Serious Works is sort of a parody title for a show that consists of paintings and sculptures done in Lee’s colorful, naive style. For this showcase, the NYC-based artist created an extensive installation within the gallery space. Adam Neate (interviewed) just released one of his peculiar dimensional paintings as a handmade multiple edition in collaboration with Elm Lesters Painting Rooms. Using variety of techniques and the highest standard of materials, the artist and the gallery managed to produce a striking edition of classic Neate portraits. Sporting a cool grey color reminiscent of his iconic vinyl figures, the KAWS x Air Jordan 4 is set for release later this month. Featuring graphic detailing from the Brooklyn-based artist and his famous double x’s on the heel tab as well as a glow in the dark outsole. Jeff Soto (interviewed) just released a new giclée print through Pangeaseed entitled The Magic Message. Hand embellished and featuring deckled edges, the 18 x 18″ edition was produced in a run of 50, costs $100, and will come signed and numbered. The image highlights the Atlantic Goliath Grouper classified as critically endangered on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Amidst all of the street art during this year’s POW! WOW! Hawaii, one of the more unique elements of the event that could be observed were the portrait sessions with James Jean (interviewed). Featuring a diverse selection of subjects, the six chosen ones sat for a few hours with the gifted artist as he masterfully captured their visages in a series of loose yet detailed paintings. On the 22nd of February, Urban Nation Museum for Urban Contemporary Art in Berlin hosted a Secret Dinner event for friends, supporters, contributors and artists participating in their ongoing programs. Around 100 guests from around the globe attended the event organized by the museum director Yasha Young and Berliner Leben, a non-profit foundation that initiated the UN project in 2013.
