Preview: Bob Dob – “Black Eyed Mouseketeers” @ Perihelion Arts

Looks like these mouseketeer buddies of Bob Dob were on the wrong side of a beat down.  He did ten variants on this theme for his show “Black Eyed Mouseketeers” opening at Perihelion Arts in Phoenix tomorrow night.  Of course, he had to include the little devil “Luey” in the mix as well.  See him and some more of the images after the jump…

Showing: Nicoletta Ceccoli – “Beauties and Beasts” & Eric Fortune – “Daughters of our Nature” @ Roq La Rue

Two artists whose work we enjoy immensely, Nicoletta Ceccoli (interviewed) & Eric Fortune (interviewed) opened up their joint show a couple weekends ago at Roq La Rue.  Ceccoli’s delicate attention to detail in and her clever juxtaposition of humans and nature (above) along with Fortune’s patient brushwork and mastery of textures/motions were on full display.  If you are lucky enough to be in the Seattle area, definitely take this opportunity to check out not one but two extraordinary artists. See some closer views after the […]

Openings: Planet Illogica Launch Party – San Diego Comic-Con 2009

Ron English (studio visit) and 2esae and SKI of Destroy and Rebuild rocked downtown San Diego’s Wonderhaus with their live painting session during the launch party for Planet Illogica, a social networking website focused on the creative arts community. Utilizing the bodies of some gorgeous models as their canvases, Ron transformed his female subjects with his pop-surrealist touch while the boys from Destroy and Rebuild gave them a little NYC flavor, hitting their subjects with throw-ups and some sick designs. Complementing the fine and graffiti art were Cirque […]

Openings: Kokeshi Show @ Japanese American National Museum

The Japanese American National Museum is holding an exhibition (previewed) until October 4th about all things “Kokeshi.”  However, the highlight of the show were the custom kokeshi’s created by many of the artists that we at AM enjoy.  It’s not often we see such an extensive list of quality artists in a group show, let alone a customs show. Take a look at all the pics after the jump.

Second Helpings: July 2009

July was a very busy month with numerous headlines making their way around the world of art. Here is another edition of Second Helpings to remind you of the juicy stories that we covered here on AM. Get served after the jump.

Teaser: Shawn Barber – “Tattooed Portraits: Snapshots” @ Shooting Gallery

One of the shows we are looking forward to this month is Shawn Barber’s solo at the Shooting Gallery in SF. His show, entitled “Tattooed Portraits: Snapshots,” will no doubt draw on his work experience and include honest portraits of tattooed patrons as well as tattoo artists. We love the way he transfuses a sense of motion to his paintings, like the piece seen above, and can’t wait to see what he has in store for this exhibition. Take a look at this nice interview […]

Showing: Victor Castillo @ Merry Karnowsky Gallery

AM recently swung through the Merry Karnowsky Gallery to take in “Gameland,” the debut Los Angeles solo show from Chilean artist Victor Castillo. Castillo was in town from Barcelona (where he now lives) for the opening, and he filled all the rooms of Karnowsky’s beautiful space, really showcasing the various characters all have come to love in his work. Children are often the main characters cast in his work, and they are often portrayed in scenes that don’t offer much hope, where weapons replace toys […]

Openings: Crazy 4 Cult 3D @ Gallery 1988 LA

AM had the pleasure of attending the opening of Crazy 4 Cult 3D show at Gallery 1988 (LA) a couple weeks ago. The 3rd installment of the wildly popular group show again brought together some of our favorite artists to reinterpret some of the most addictive cult films of all time. Again, we saw the perennial favorites such as The Professional, Edward Scissorhands, Office Space and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. But what we enjoyed were some new cult films such as The Jerk, Never […]

Highlights: Recommended Openings For July 30 – August 5

This Friday in San Diego, Kelly Vivanco returns after her highly successful solo outing at Thinkspace in Los Angeles. Subtext welcomes Kelly along with the up and coming Jason Limon. The botanical aspects in both artists’ work seems to be one of the main unifying themes in the show and their works play off each other nicely. Definitely a show to catch if you’re in the San Diego area this weekend. Subtext rocked things with their recent Comic-Con weekend only show and this is a […]
