Studio Visits: Jeff Soto (Part II)

Here is Part II of our visit to Jeff Soto’s studio (see part I here). Besides showing us some of his new work for his upcoming show at the Riverside Art Museum, Jeff also decided to let us watch him paint. At first, there were just splotches of color he used as the background, but soon characteristic shapes and details were added. It was a real joy to watch Jeff at work and amazing how quickly he worked. See the process after the jump.

Openings: Jose Parla @ Cristina Grajales

AM was in attendance Saturday night for the opening of Jose Parla’s first NYC solo show, entitled Layered Days at Cristina Grajales. In addition to the caligraphic abstract paintings and watercolors for which Parla has earned his reputation as one of urban art’s most sought-after artists, the exhibition also included several beautiful ceramic works, made in collaboration with the Ichi-Yo Gama family-owned Bizen-yaki factory in Japan. There was also a wall-sized mixed-medium installation of paintings, drawings, photography and more. Parla himself was on hand for […]

Openings: Hush @ Opus Gallery

Hush’s show Desensitized (previewed) opened up at Opus Gallery a couple nights ago. His return to Newcastle (where he studied Graphic Design & Illustrator at Newcastle school of Art & Design for 5 years) was marked by street installations and a exhibition of his characteristic melding of the asian influences of his travels with the style of UK street art. Photo of the opening after the jump.

It’s A New Day – will.i.am

A new celebration video for Obama came out recently by will.i.am from the Black Eyed Peas.  What’s interesting is that alot of the street art and iconic images from his campaign were incorporated from artists such as Shepard Fairey, Ron English, and even Josh Keyes (not sure why?).  Also stopped by Subliminal Projects last night to see the “Letters and Ligatures” show and chatted a little with Shepard Fairey and he told us that some of the video was filmed on the roof and around […]

Openings: The Drawing Room @ Thinkspace

Last night’s show “The Drawing Room” (previewed) at Thinkspace opened with a tremendous showing by art fans. The long line snaked outside from the beginning to end with the gallery packed to maximum capacity. Not only were the fans there to see Audrey Kawasaki (curator) & her work, they were there for the many other talented artists that participated in the show. Photos after the jump.

Teaser: Matt Dangler @ M Modern

Matt Dangler just sent us the the promo image he scanned in for his “Out From the Whirlwind” show at M Modern. The opening reception is scheduled for December 12th. While this won’t be for quite some time, we expect a great show from this young artist. The piece shown above is an 8″ x 10″ titled “Mysterium Tremendum”. Matt added, “most of the pieces will be keyed in earth tones”. He continues – The theme is going to be “Out from the whirlwind” – […]

Openings: Faile – Lost in Glimmering Shadows

At an abandoned school house in Vauxhall, UK last night, Faile and Lazarides held a special opening reception for their new show: Lost In Glimmering Shadows. There was much speculation and rumors regarding their new works which included Wood Palettes and Prayer Wheels. AM recently previewed some exclusive images for the coming show, but we never could imagine what the final product would be… Judging from the last night’s tremendous opening, it’s apparent that Faile brought the “heavy lumber” directly from New York and transformed this schoolhouse […]

Openings: Greg Simkins – It Wanders West

Ever let your imagination run wild? Well you wouldn’t have a choice at a Craola show and this one was a stunner. Last night, Greg “Craola” Simkins premiered Part II of his “It Wanders…” show and AM was on hand to catch the opening reception. A lively crowd quickly packed Gallery 1988 to see the sold-out show. Greg was on hand to meet and greet his numerous fans. Taking time to speak and catch up with his fans is something that Greg tries to do […]

Openings: Paul Insect @ Fifty24SF Gallery

Our friend Rhinomilk sent us some photos from the Paul Insect opening last night at Fifty24SF. The entrance to the gallery looked pretty badass with all of the baby head images plastered over the walls and ceilings. Follow us inside … after the jump.

Preview: Tessar Lo/Moira Hahn @ Roq La Rue

Kirsten from Roq La Rue has sent us an early look at the installation Tessar Lo working on for his two-person show (teased) with Moira Hahn opening tomorrow. That large installation he is setting up looks pretty insane with it’s patchwork of different sized pieces and mediums. Wish we could be there to watch this textured patchwork slowly take shape. More photos after the jump along with a glimpse at Moira’s works well.
