Nuart Street Art Buses (M-City)

Nuart Festival just announced the continuation of their series of curated Street Art buses (covered), as part of their on-going project to establish Stavanger as the world’s first ‘Art City’. The latest addition to the fleet of a local bus company Kolumbus has been designed by the M-City. Aside from turning the standard public bus into a three-dimensional, mobile artwork, the Polish artist created an engaged and provocative piece by painting a raft full of people on the side of it. Similar to recent installation (covered) by Ai Weiwei […]

Showing: DALeast – “Plasma” @ Weinstein Gallery

On March 18th, Weinstein Gallery in San Francisco hosted a big comeback solo show by DALeast (interviewed). After more than a year of traveling and self discovery, the Chinese-born artist introduced a new body of work entitled Plasma. Taking the scientific definition of plasma as an inspiration, the new pieces continue artist’s quest for inner self and speak to the connection between living beings on Earth. Seeing people and animals as unbound elements that are inevitably interacting with each other, DALeast presents life on Earth as a macro version of a plasma structure. […]

Recap: Marco Mazzoni – “Dear Collapse” @ Thinkspace Gallery

Closing last weekend at Thinkspace was an exhibition from Marco Mazzoni entitled Dear Collapse, his second solo with the gallery in Los Angeles. On display were a series of colored pencil drawings that the Milan-based artist has been known for, portraits featuring obscured faces bursting forth with flora and fauna. The new body of work was inspired by “ancient Sardinian folklore and its traditions of oral storytelling – the history of its matriarchal culture, and the central role women played as herbalists and healers in […]

Showing: The Toaster – ‘Toasted’ @ Jealous Gallery

The Toaster art collective have opened a ‘pop-up’ exhibition at Jealous Gallery in London. Following on from pioneers such as Goldie and Dicy, The Toasters emerged out of the Black Country graffiti scene in the UK in the late 1990s. Their work has seen them reproduce their image of the seemingly mundane toaster on a global scale with Toaster flags being flown at the Glastonbury Festival, Toaster road markings being painted along the route of the Tour de France and postal stickers being stuck up […]

Recap: Erin M. Riley – “Simple” @ Hashimoto Contemporary

Just last weekend in San Francisco, Hashimoto Contemporary closed a solo show from Erin M. Riley (interviewed) entitled Simple. The new weavings continue the Brooklyn-based artist’s provocative work pushing the boundaries of the medium with non-traditional imagery. Nude selfies, car wrecks, evidence of domestic violence – no subject matter is too taboo for Riley as she takes her tapestries to the next level rendering imagery that most observers wouldn’t even think are possible with medium of choice. Discuss Shaun Roberts here. Discuss Erin M. Riley here.

Previews: Jacub Gagnon – “Short Stories” @ Thinkspace Gallery

On April 1st, Thinkspace Gallery will be opening Short Stories, their third solo show from Jacub Gagnon (interviewed) in their Culver City space. The new body of work sees the Canadian painter continue his penchant for combining familiar elements like woodland creatures and everyday objects in surreal juxtapositions that make  sense when you consider the clever titles of the paintings. In fact, he starts his pieces first by coming up with the play on words that become the names of his paintings and then the associated vignettes that become the […]

Streets: Boa Mistura (Brazil)

Revisiting their installation (covered) from 2012 in the Favela of Vila Brasilandia, at the north of Sao Paulo, Boa Mistura returned to update the project. Entitled Luz Nas Vielas, the undertaking saw the collective paint a series of words and colors through their signature use of anamorphosis in the alleyways of the favela. Seen from just the right angle, the words magically appear to float in the air, with the new words “Poesía” and “Magica” (Poetry & Magic) now joining “Amor, Beleza, Orgulho, Doçura, Firmeza” (Love, Pride, Sweetness, […]
