Streets: Andreas Englund // Urban Nation (Berlin)

Painting over the course of five days for Urban Nation, Andreas Englund’s latest creation is a clever take on Rodin’s sculpture The Kiss. Pairing the iconic piece from the French sculptor with his own Voyeur sculpture, the two part mural (at Bülowstraße 93) executed with an expert three-dimensional perspective is a striking piece with commentary on modern society. Take a look at more in-progress photos below… Discuss Andrew England here.

Openings: James Bullough – “Breaking Point” @ Thinkspace Gallery

Last month, at the same time as Curiot’s immersive showing at Thinkspace Gallery, the Berlin-based James Bullough also presented an all new set of works. Collectively entitled Breaking Point, the new paintings are classic examples of the American artist’s fragmented portraiture. Inspired by “moments in life, good or bad, that hit like a flash, break you down and rearrange your parts, when everything seems to change in an instant,” Bullough’s new pieces feature his levitating characters, rendered with glitchy overlapping segments. Openings: Jedediah Voltz – “Somewhere Small” @ Virgil Normal

Back in April, Virgil Normal in Los Angeles hosted a brief showing of miniature “tree” houses from Jedediah Voltz. His whimsical structures embedded in the branches of common household plants (such as succulents) featured a high level of detail to include tiny furniture, pots, rugs, and other accessories. As a creative outlet for his commercial prop making experience, the series of tiny domiciles is obviously a labor of love, something his audience appreciated leading to an almost sold out opening night. With both the mural and the new drawings as well as watercolors on paper produced for the show, the Argentinean artist will interpret the theme of coexistence. With this in mind, the new pieces have a somewhat different composition, often referring to the concept of […]

Streets: Ron English – “Temper Pac” @ Art Gathering LA

Last week, Art Gathering LA, a tattoo convention that also presented artworks from across the globe from over 400 of the world’s leading tattooists, was hosted by the historic Queen Mary in Long Beach. For the inaugural event, Ron English (featured) was invited in to create a piece to mark the occasion. The New York-based artist chose to take one of his signature Temper Tot images and change it up by creating a mashup between the baby hulk and Tupac, the result which he dubbed Temper Pac. Releases: Huskmitnavn – “Papirarbejde” (Paperworks)” Book

For the last several years, Huskmitnavn (featured) has devoted time to creating and sharing his witty drawings on paper. Recently, he collected some of the personal favorites into a new book titled Papirarbejde (Paperworks). Between working on paintings, murals, illustrating, and the occasional graffiti adventure, the Copenhagen-based artist has spent the last few years creating little paper works almost daily. Often folding, bending, and tearing the surface in order to achieve the desired outcome, the idea is to get the strongest possible effect with the minimal possible intervention. These ink on […]

Streets: Guido van Helten (Iceland)

Australian director & editor Selina Miles and artist Guido van Helten recently revealed a 6-minute film about their journey to Akureyri in Iceland. Back in August of 2015, the two traveled to north coast of Iceland to produce this self initiated collaboration of documenting the process of painting a mural on a local ship. The Canberra-born van Helten is a contemporary artist known for his massive scale, site-specific, portraiture murals. Part visual artist, part anthropologist, his subjects are water colored and sepia toned, imitating long forgotten photographs he […]
