Previews: “Inside/Out” @ Mecka NYC

Mecka NYC is introducing an interesting project titled INSIDE/OUT, a unique, new event that will merge an exhibition, social media hunt, and fund raising event for Swoon’s (interviewed) ongoing Braddock Tiles event. Releases: VNA 27 – Aryz Cover

VNA magazine just revealed the contents and the look of the limited edition of their newest issue #27 that will be available tonight at the official release party @ StolenSpace in London. With Aryz as their cover artist, the magazine released 3 different covers – regular, subscription and the limited one. Openings: Sam Falls – “Light Over Time” @ MetroTech Center

The Los Angeles-based Sam Falls recently returned to Brooklyn for an outdoor project with the help of The Public Art Fund. Entitled Light Over Time, this exhibition held in the MetroTech Center courtyard clearly brings Fall’s installation magic into the outdoor setting. There are five sculptural works placed in select locations that invite the viewer to interact with the pieces. Streets: Swoon for Djerbahood (Tunisia)

Another artist who traveled to Tunisia for the Djerbahood Project (coverage here) was the Brooklyn-based Swoon (interviewed). She joined the long list of artists invited by Galerie Itinerrance to beautify the North African island. Working with her distinctive imagery and the village architecture, she certainly put up some compelling pieces for the locals to enjoy. After putting in her time on this project, she returned home to learn that she was nominated for the Smithsonian Biennial James Dicke Contemporary Artist Prize. Upcoming: “Unnatural Histories III” @ Antler Gallery

Opening on September 25th, Unnatural Histories III will be will be the third in a series (see 2013) of shows at Antler Gallery featuring portraits of mythical creatures. Along with the piece from Josh Keyes (seen above), works from Vanessa Foley, Michael Page, Craww, Syd Bee, Brin Levinson, Ryan Berkley, Ben Kehoe, Siolo Thompson, Susannah Kelly, Annie Owens, Niel M. Florentijn Hofman’s Giant Rubber Duck (Los Angeles)

For fans in Los Angeles who looked at Hong Kong in envy as Florentijn Hofman’s giant “rubber” duck (covered) rolled into the harbor, your time has come. The whimsical inflatable childhood bath toy will be viewable at the Tall Ships Festival from August 20-24 starting today when the oversized duck (61 feet, 11 tons, about 85 feet wide and about 110 feet long) will lead the Grand Parade of Sail into San Pedro at 2 pm. Streets: El Mac (Toronto)

El Mac was finally able to leave the States for the first big mural project he has done out of the country since having struggled with health issues as of late. Thankfully, it looks like he has recovered nicely with his skills intact from the looks of this stunning piece that was commissioned by Eventscape in Toronto. The wall adjacent to the Gardiner Expressway was executed in collaboration with Montreal’s STARE and Toronto’s KWEST, who contributed on the background.
