Continuing his long history with Jonathan LeVine Gallery (see 2012, 2010), painter Alex Gross (interviewed) is preparing for his fourth solo with the New York showspace. Set to open on October 9th, Future Tense will feature a new series of oil paintings and mixed media works that will continue to explore ideas of how modern society relates to technology and our consumer culture. As always, the Los Angeles-based artist will present his artistic visions beautifully rendered in well composed paintings combining different elements drawn from various influences. […]

Openings: Takashi Murakami – “Arhat Cycle” @ Palazzo Reale

Four years since Takashi Murakami’s show at Versailles in France (covered), the Japanese contemporary artist just opened a show with a similar kind of atmosphere at Milan’s Royal Palace (Palazzo Reale). Curated by Francesco Bonami and organized by Blum & Poe along with Kaikai Kiki Co., Ltd, this is Murakami’s first exhibition in a public space in Italy. For this showing, the leader of the Superflat movement prepared new works presenting styles and techniques developed over the last two years. Juxtapozed against the imposing interior of the former Royal Palace, the entire […]

Art Focus: Jessica Stoller

Our next Art Focus feature is on sculptor Jessica Stoller and her provocative porcelain works. Her ornate, Rococo-influenced creations take a traditional medium and add a modern twist to it. The mix of decadent foods, masked characters, signs of decay, BDSM references, voluptuous body parts – all piled to together – challenge the viewer to find beauty in the grotesque. Some of her most effective work comes in the form of still lifes, but instead of painted, are composed of a selection of her unexpected deviant sculptures […]

For those who like to plan ahead, on September 11th this year, Wayne White will be opening a new show at the Joshua Liner Gallery in New York. Entitled Invisible Ruler, the new body of work will include his signature word paintings as well as works on paper he created during a residency at the Rauschenberg Foundation. Showing: Vhils – “Dissection” @ Electricity Museum / EDP Foundation

Earlier this month, the Electricity Museum / EDP Foundation in Lisbon hosted the opening of Vhils’ (filmed) expansive museum show, his largest to date. Along with several public works (covered here & here) in the capital city, the pieces included in the show put his unique mark-making and destructive techniques on display from his chiseled surfaces on found objects, to torn and ripped media pieces, to […]

Continuing his recent work encompassing the animal kingdom (see 2013), explosive artist Cai Guo-Qiang has created a new striking installation on the Huangpu River in Shanghai. Entitled The Ninth Wave, this installation is the public face of a new solo from the Chinese artist at the Power Station of Art starting on August 8th. The boat with weary animals clinging to it takes its name from “Russian painter Ivan Aivazovsky’s 1850 eponymous painting, which famously depicted survivors from a shipwreck clinging to a mast as in […]

Today we have for you a sneak peek of an upcoming collaboration (arranged by LeBasse Projects) from Matsu & Harbour City that has been getting prepped for lucky art heads in Hong Kong. Entitled Sky Is The Limit, a 6.5 meter-high stainless steel sculpture with one of his characters riding a horse aiming for the atmosphere from the Brooklyn-based Japanese artist will be unveiled soon. Based loosely on the classic […]

Sketchbook: James Jean

Fans of James Jean (interviewed) may remember his recent work with Linkin Park on the cover of their new album (covered). While wokring on the concepts and fleshing out the imagery for that project, the gifted artist filled up one of his sketchbooks with some pretty amazing drawings. Take a look at more photos over on Hypebeast as well as some more samples below… Photo credit: Sean Marc Lee / Hypebeast. Discuss James Jean here.

Openings: CRASH – “Broken English” @ Jonathan LeVine Gallery

One of the summer exhibitions that we checked out recently was by Bronx-based graffiti artist Crash, a.k.a. John Matos (featured) at Jonathan LeVine Gallery. Entitled Broken English this freshly minted body of work spanned traditional mediums such as canvas and paper, but also highlights Crash’s dexterity as a graffiti master as he worked his painterly street magic to redo a Mini Cooper in his signature style & visual language. This great exhibition will be up until July 26th, so if you’re in NYC, this is a must see. Photo credit: Joe Russo for Arrested Motion. […]
