Preview: Hiro Kurata – “This Land Was Your Land” @ Ivory & Black

Opening Friday night (November 9th) at the Ivory & Black in Soho is Hiro Kurata’s This Land Was Your Land. Along with footage from his studio, show openings, and work in the streets, you can also see footage of the MSK / AWR affiliated writer talk about his beginnings, the philosophy behind his work, and what he hopes to accomplish with his art. Showing: “Lazarides Presents…” @ Lazarides (Rathbone Place)

Currently showing at Lazarides’ main location (Rathbone Place) is a group exhibition that will give fans an idea of what kind of shows are planned through 2013 with the gallery. Along with some vintage Banksy works, on display were also some sublime paintings form Conor Harrington, new work from Faile with a slight twist, a piece from newcomer Know Hope and more (full list here). Openings: Jacub Gagnon – “More Human Than Human” @ Thinkspace

Last weekend, Canadian painter Jacub Gagnon (interviewed) put his new work, collectively entitled More Human Than Human, on display in the Thinkspace project room. The sold out show of seven pieces featured his surreal renderings of wildlife set against a stark black background combining his creatures with objects often dictated by a clever play on words. Upcoming: Kate MccGwire – “Lure” @ All Visual Arts

Later this month, sculptor Kate MccGwire returns to All Visual Arts in her home city of London (see 2011) for a new solo show entitled Lure – “a dual reference to the ring of feathers used by a falconer to call and command their birds, and to the siren-like call of the work itself.” Creating non-conventional sculptural works with her material of choice – iridescent feathers – MccGwire is able to shape the plumage into undulating and seductive structures.
