Basel Week Miami ’10: Ryan McGinness – “Women: The Blacklight Paintings” @ Club Madonna

One of the most anticipated events of Basel Week Miami was the opening party for Ryan McGinness’ latest series of works Women: The New Blacklight Paintings. Presented by the folks at Country Club x The Standard Miami, the show was held inside a South Beach Strip Club (Club Madonna). Much like the mural which Ryan created for Wynwood Walls, the works took on another dimension once the black light hit. The stunning reactive paint just popped out for the viewers. Upping the ante for the opening, […]

Videos: JR – “Women Are Heroes”

It looks like JR has uploaded more tantalizing extracts from his Women Are Heroes movie that debuted at Cannes Film Festival earlier this year. Part of the street photographer’s 28 Millimètres project, this film chronicles his efforts to bring attention to the plight of downtrodden women everywhere by pasting up large-scale photos in an urban setting (see Paris). More footage after the jump…

Openings: “TRANSFORM” @ Sho Gallery

AM recently attended a great show at the Sho Gallery in Brooklyn. The group exhibition entitled TRANSFORM showcased the paintings and sculptures of 30 artists that work for or have worked at Takashi Murakami’s Kaikai Kiki Studios. Although this show was not in anyway affiliated with the studio, it certainly impressed with the overwhelming talent that this influential studio possess. Artists such as Tat Ito (featured), Pete Watts (featured), Fumi Nakamura, Cybele, Matt Haber and Eugenia Yu gave us a glimpse at their off-hours talent in […]

Basel Week Miami ’10 – Corey Helford Gallery

One of the highlights of the Scope Art Fair this year was the booth from LA’s Corey Helford Gallery. From the moment we stepped foot in area, we noticed a plethora of art from some AM’s favorites like as Luke Chueh, D*Face, Chloe Early, Ron English, Natalia Fabia, Korin Faught, Eric Joyner, Brandi Milne, Sylvia Ji and Shag. The lux booth design was inviting as pimp couches and rugs invited spectators to take a load off to stare at a great preview of artwork for the […]

Videos: Basel Week Miami ’10: Wynwood Walls

As you know, Wynwood Walls was one of the centerpieces of the Art Basel Week Miami experience when it came to outdoor work. Other than the photos we shared with you here, we thought you would like to see some video footage of all the action provided by Vernissage TV. As an added bonus, Tony Goldman, the man behind the entire project, and his daughter Jessica were interviewed on the subject (seen after the jump).

Basel Week Miami ’10 – Hauser & Wirth

As they did at Art Basel Switzerland, Hauser & Wirth brought some spectacular Paul McCarthy pieces to share with the Art Basel Miami Beach attendees.  Luckily, they also exhibited works by other artists in their esteemed program, including Louise Bourgeois, Martin Creed, Subodh Gupta, Mary Heilmann, Roni Horn, Bharti Kher, John McCracken, Joan Mitchell, Roman Signer and Monika Sosnowska. The well-curated booth was a treat to visit and view.  See the works for yourself after the jump…

Basel Week Miami ’10 – Paula Cooper Gallery

Two stars of the last auction season – Rudolph Stingel and Kelley Walker, who both had auction records set, were featured up close and personal at Paula Cooper’s booth during Art Basel Miami Beach.  The gallery’s stacked roster of artists provided them with fantastic pieces by the aforementioned duo and also Carl Andre and Wayne Gonzales (pictured above).  The diversity of their program was on display as you can see after the jump…

Streets: Judith Supine (Los Angeles)

It looks like Judith Supine was recently in Los Angeles for a visit. While in town, he took time to throw up several of his signature “green skinned” collaged pieces including one that was put in New Image Art’s show (covered) in Miami for Art Basel Week. Thankfully, his buddy Skullphone had time to shoot some pics before the rains started. More after the jump…

Openings: Josh Agle (SHAG) – “Ambergris” @ Jonathan LeVine Gallery

Last Saturday night, the Jonathan LeVine Gallery hosted the opening of SHAG’s (interviewed) newest body of work “Ambergris” (previewed). As indicated by the obscure title, the new collection of paintings are centered on a nautical, and more specifically, a whaling theme, all while maintaining his mid-century aesthetic. Happily, the artist was able to to make it to the opening despite an unfortunate accident that left him injured. Take a look at all the opening pics after the jump…
