Basel Week Miami ’10 – “Urban Alchemists” @ Jonathan LeVine Gallery

The Wynwood Walls was a very unique project that brought the arts back to a worn down district of Miami. Along with the already gorgeous mural projects and indoor art cafe, this year brought another aspect to the Wynwood destination – a unique project space where Jonathan LeVine put on his Urban Alchemist group exhibition (previewed). We stopped by to hang out and soak in the works of AJ Fosik, Dan Witz, Doze Green, Invader, James Marshall (Dalek), Jim Houser, Judith Supine, Mario Martinez (Mars-1), […]

Video: Barry McGee “TRANSFER” Footage

You may remember earlier this year, July to be exact, when we shared some photos with you of the traveling museum exhibition TRANSFER when it opened at the Brazilian Cultural Pavilion. Well, Barry McGee, whom we last saw at Art Basel Week, had a part in that exhibition and here is footage to prove it. Take a look at some rare moments captured on video as he painted and prepped for his installation at the museum. Via Known Gallery. Discuss Barry McGee here.

Openings: Cleon Peterson – “Daybreak” @ New Image Art

Revelries of unrestrained passions, secret desires, and violent indulgences invaded the New Image Art Gallery recently with the opening of Cleon Peterson’s newest show – Daybreak (previewed). Drawing inspiration from Nietzsche’s Daybreak: Reflections on Moral Prejudices, Peterson seeks to graphically explore both the light and dark sides of the human condition. As you will see, in addition to his usual action-packed landscapes, there were also some interesting abstract works included in this new body of work. More opening images after the jump…

Preview: James Franco – “The Dangerous Book Four Boys” @ Peres Projects

Peres Projects’ physical space in Los Angeles may be long gone, but it looks like the spirit of Hollywood still lives with the cutting edge gallery in Germany.  No stranger to the entertainment industry (Terence Koh, has been creating pieces for Lady Gaga’s shows and Bruce La Bruce is an accomplished film director), Peres Projects will open a exhibition with work by respected actor James Franco on Feb. 11. The show will be Franco’s first solo and will feature video, paintings, drawings, and photographs.  Though […]

Allison Sommers’ Hand-Painted Book

Inspired by her recent visit to the NY Art Book Fair (where we spied Tauba Auerbach’s upcoming pop-up book), Allison Sommers (interviewed) decided to work on a project of her own. The resulting labor of love was GK:2, a beautiful handpainted and hand-sewn art book put together using watercolor paper and bound by wallpaper scraps. You can read more about her process on her blog, and take a look at more pics after the jump…

Openings: “Atrophic Existence” @ Show & Tell

A couple Saturdays ago, Show & Tell Gallery played host to a cohesive group show from Kevin Cyr (interviewed), Mike Shankman, Jeff Gillette, Joshua Barndt, and Alex Lukas entitled Atrophic Existence. Along with some pretty nice pieces from a group of painters whose work focuses on urban decay and disintegration, Gillette also brought some beautiful sculptural renderings of his shantytown structures and you could not miss the massive central installation from Barndt entitled The World is a Mountain and Everything Gets Buried. More opening pics […]

Openings: Kid Zoom – “This City Will Eat Me Alive” @ Opera (NYC Pop-Up)

AM recently caught the opening night of Kid Zoom’s first ever US solo show This City Will Eat Me Alive. The large pop-up space opened by the Opera Gallery in the the hip meat packing district was a great setting to showcase KZ’s large size paintings. Just as we previewed in our recent studio visit, Kid Zoom utilized his signature spray techniques to create the works that delighted fans who made it out to see this body of work. Catch it all after the jump.

KAWS Giant Companion Comes to Aldrich Contemporary

It appears KAWS has gifted the Northeast with a Giant Companion for the Holiday Season. First featured during his Hong Kong exhibit, Passing Through (covered), the 16 foot fiberglass sculpture has concluded a long journey to the US by settling down on the snowy lawn of The Aldrich Contemporary Museum, where it joined the rest of the work already on display for the artist’s first museum solo exhibition (covered). A symbolic and triumphant ending, indeed, to a meteoric year from the multi-dimensional Brooklyn-based artist. While […]

Openings: Dennis McNett – “Reaping Waves and Vital Vessels/The Passing of the Wolfbats” @ Joshua Liner Gallery

Last Thursday night, AM was on hand for one of the most exciting openings we’ve ever experienced: Dennis Mcnett’s Reaping Waves and Vital Vessels at the Joshua Liner Gallery. We had been impressed by the individual carved wood works we had seen during our studio visit with McNett, and although those pieces were included in the show, the total was so much more than just the sum of those individual parts. In addition, he created two large-scale installations for the gallery, including one with three […]
