Isaac Lin Mural @ Elixr Coffee (Philadelphia)

Elixr Coffee in Philadelphia is continuing their art program by commissioning Isaac Lin to create an indoor mural at their city center location. After Jim Houser painted one back in August (covered), this was the third piece they have commissioned from local creatives. Lin is a versatile artist who painted a wall for the Philadelphia International Airport last year, created one of his images that is strongly influenced by cartoons and calligraphy, as well as his passion for graffiti. As previously mentioned, Shepard Fairey (featured) is currently in his studio preparing for his upcoming exhibition The Insistent Image: Recurrent Motifs in the Art of Shepard Fairey and Jasper Johns opening at the Halsey Institute of Contemporary Art on May 22. POW! WOW! ’14 / Streets: Andrew Schoultz & Hannah Stouffer

Another collaboration that grabbed our attention during this year’s POW! WOW! Hawaii was a long joint mural from Andrew Schoultz and Hannah Stouffer. The waves and kinetic imagery from Schoultz provided a nice contrast to the softer forest renderings and volcanic eruptions of Stouffer, providing an interesting continous landscape for the people who pass by in the industrial district of Kaka’ako. Previews: JR x NYCB Theatrical Performance

After creating the NYCB’s 2014 Art Series installation (covered), JR is taking the collaboration with New York City Ballet to a new level as a theatrical director. The versatile French artist came up with the idea of creating something on the stage of NYCB while working on his art installation, and the result of that idea is an eight-minute pièce d’occasion, conceived and directed by him. Hendrik “ECB” Beikirch recently visited India where he created another portrait style mural that he is known for. In order to commemorate the 66th anniversary of the death of Mahatma Gandhi, the German artist created a huge portrait of the civil rights icon with the help of Indian artist Anpu Varkey. A couple weekends ago, old friends RISK (interviewed) and Nathan Ota opened up a show together at the Corey Helford Gallery. Displaying their collaborative efforts (like the paintings seen in 2011 in LA & SF), the two artists put together a cohesive new body of work that features RISK’s deconstructive color washes & lettering along with Ota’s surreal characters.
