Auctions: Bonhams “Urban Art Sale” Results (September)

Last Wednesday, Bonhams hosted their September Urban Art Sale to a “packed house” at the New Bond Street location in Central London. As we highlighted the strength of some recent Banksy results in our overview and analysis of his Top 25 Most Expensive Works Ever, money appears to continue pouring into street art unimpeded at the auction level, despite the general malaise evident in the financial markets. This fact was further reinforced in the wake of last week’s Bonhams Sale, with the auction realizing a […]

Streets: Wynwood Walls Update (Miami)

It looks like Wynwood Walls is kicking off things early this year because just after RETNA hit up his wall in Miami, ROA, Gaia, Nunca, HOW & NOSM, the Date Farmers, Faile, and Bast rolled into town to do their thing. Undoubtedly, this year’s event will be just as looked forward to as last year’s edition, with a nice list of artists worked up already. We’ll be checking out these murals in person once Art Basel Week Miami rolls around. *Original set of photos removed […]

Openings: Steve Powers / Barry McGee / Todd James – “Contemporaries” @ Galleria Patricia Armocida (Milan)

A couple weeks ago, Patricia Armocida Gallery opened a group show curated by Steve Powers (aka ESPO) at their Milan location. For Contemporaries, the venerable Philadelphia-based street artist hand selected ten artists from both the East and West Coasts of the United States, balancing the artistic dialogue between the old school and the new school generations. Of course, taking center stage were Barry McGee (aka TWIST), Todd James (aka REAS), and ESPO himself, the trio being longtime friends and collaborators perhaps best known for their […]

Streets: Blu @ Tudela Avant-Garde Urbano Festival (Spain)

The man never stops. And for that, we are grateful. After a quick stop in Valencia, Blu has since journeyed north into the heart of Spain to partake in Avant-Garde Urbano in the cozy town of Tudela de Navarra. With signature iconography and social commentary, the ubiquitous Italian artist kicks things off at this inaugural street art event, the likes of which have sprung up at an unprecedented rate throughout Europe as a tool to attract tourists and bring money into the community. The festival […]

Interview / Videos: Mark Jenkins for Beck’s Green Box Project

Washington DC-based artist Mark Jenkins, whose work we enjoyed back in March at the VOLTA fair during Armory Week, recently got involved with the Beck’s Green Box Project, an interesting application of new technology in the streets. The ambitious undertaking, which plans to showcase 1,000 projects by individuals over the next three years, utilizes the Beck’s Key App (also with Android support), which allows people to overlay their mobile devices / tablet computers over “green box” locations and see an augmented reality like 3D or […]

Streets: TrustoCorp – “Drive Through Liposuction” (Brooklyn)

This summer saw TrustoCorp truly spread their satirical wings with smart and assertive street interventions on both coasts, critiquing the ugliness of pop culture with signature wry wit and multiple campaigns in Los Angeles and New York. In perhaps their most humorous, most direct, and most popular intervention to date, a series of faux trash mags were planted at news stands in and around airports in LA and NYC. Now, as fall is about to set in, the Brooklyn-based collective once again targets vanity and […]

Streets: Lawrence Epps – Ceramic ‘Human Resources’ Treasure Hunt

Regular readers of AM may recognise the name Lawrence Epps as he is one of our contributors here in the UK. Lawrence is also a ceramicist based in Cambridge, and we wanted to share with you a project he is working on at the moment. This Wednesday, September 28th, Lawrence is unleashing an interventionist street drop at dawn in both London and Stoke-On-Trent to coincide with his participation in the British Ceramics Biennial, which runs from September 30th until 13th November in the heart of […]

Streets: London Instagram Roundup

Some great street art surprises have popped up around Shoreditch since the last AM London Instagram Roundup. First up, this brilliant, huge piece by the prolific Sweet Toof and CEPT at Village Underground was exceptionally nice to see. LUDO (featured) has also been getting up with his paste-ups whilst in London for his solo show Metamorphosis at High Roller Society (covered). In addition, Australian artist Ghostpatrol has been busy collaborating with Kid Acne, Ema and Dscreet on an amazing wall in Dalston; and he has also been working with Malarky (a […]

Preview / Installation: Interesni Kazki – “Objects of the Universe” @ Avantgarden

Coming up on Thursday night, September 29th, in Milan, street sensations Interesni Kazki will be opening their solo show at AvantGarden. The Ukrainian duo’s work is colorful and surreal with almost a Dali-esque feel to it.  Appropriately, their exhibition is entitled Objects of the Universe as their paintings are typically filled with disparate mundane items arranged in inventive compositions. Also, interesting will be how their work (see Russia, Ibiza, Portugal, and Slovakia) translates indoors although they will be working on some wall murals as well. […]

Videos / Teaser: Lazarides Minotaur Event @ The Old Vic Tunnels

Perhaps influenced by the pop-up restaurant The Tree House (see video above) in Frankfurt for which he presumably curated the artwork for, Lazarides will be bringing the PRET A DINER concept in for his newest project in London. During Frieze and the London Restaurant Festival, from October 10 – 25, the gallery will be organizing a show and pop-up fine dining experience in The Old Vic Tunnels, site of 2010’s Hell’s Half Acre exhibition. Preparing the food will be top Michelin-starred chefs Nuno Mendes (Viajante, London), […]
