The Smithsonian Institution hasÂ always beenÂ considered one of most prestigious museums in the world.Â It houses some amazing worksÂ including the “Portraits of America’s Presidents.” So,Â what’s a more fitting way to kick off the inauguration weekend than with the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery unveiling and inducting Shepard Fairey’s symbolic “Hope” image of Barack Obama. The Manifest Hope: DC exhibition, showcasing the spirit of the grass-root artist movement, officially opened it’s doors Saturday morning, but Friday night, select VIPs and friends were invited to preview the pop-up gallery.Â The packed house reflected the energy that is currently flowing into the nation’s capital for Inauguration. Black Rat Press @ the London Art Fair

As previously mentioned, Black Rat Press exhibited at the London Art Fair where they showed works by Swoon, Matt Small, Lucas Price, Asha Zero, Brian Adam Douglas, D*Face and Nick Walker.Â As expected, Walker’s print sold out, but there were actually some pretty good originals available.Â In particular, Swoon’s and Matt Small’s pieces were quite strong.Â Take a look after the jump.

AM brings you a preview from the ever busy set up at the “pop-up” Manifest Hope gallery at the Nation’s capital.Â Tomorrow is almost here, and the gallery is set to open at 10 am for all the people who are in town to see the inauguration.Â Manifest Hope will be opened during MLK weekend and but will be closed on Tuesday to observe the Presidential inauguration. Interviews: James “Dalek” Marshall

James Marshall, aka Dalek, is known for brightly colored, superflat paintings consisting of his signature Space Monkeys. But since his 2007 show at New York’s Jonathan Levine Gallery, entitled Desperate, Rejected and Angry, the military brat and once graffiti artist has been pushing the boundaries of his style, becoming more and more geometric and abstract. AM is on-site at Manifest Hope DC and it is getting hectic at the gallery. It’s midnight here and the crew of over 30 volunteers are now running on Red Bull and Red Stripe. AM was in attendance Saturday night for the opening of Italian street artist Ericailcane’s first Los Angeles solo show entitled “Man is the Bastard” (previewed) at Carmichael Gallery. The highlights of the show were the massive installation pieces that covered both of the gallery’s front walls, ominously greeting attendees with a taste of the absurd scenarios found in the rest of the work on display.
