Aakash Nihalani

Recently saw the work of New York artist Aakash Nihilani and thought his simple concept was quite fresh and interesting. His work includes tape installations on the streets as well as canvas pieces. 17 Frost and Bose Pacia hosted an event today in Williamsburg, where you could meet Nihalani and perhaps see some of his impromptu tape work. If you missed this, his show “Extended” will be showing to the public next Saturday, the 29th. The gallery is located at 17 Frost Street (between Union […]

Openings: Shag and Calma @ Jonathan LeVine

Last night, AM was on hand at Jonathan LeVine for the preview of two great shows, Shag’s Voyeur (previewed/interviewed) and Stephan “Calma” Doitschinoff’s Novo Mundo. Shag’s work is nothing less than magnetic from the second one enters the gallery. Each painting is sharp and vibrant in its given color palette, and all the works together form a rainbow that shocks the viewer’s senses! (Think of a “mod” fiesta for the eyes.) In addition to the paintings, there is an installation room, with floating metallic fishes […]

Kenwood Vineyards’ Shepard Fairey wine

AM is crazy about art, but we also appreciate many of the other finer things in life. However, sometimes our art obsession leaves little time to think about anything else. That’s why we were happy to see that California’s Kenwood Vineyards has come up with a way to simultaneously enjoy urban art and wine that is much better than the previous method of drinking “Mad Dog” on the streets of Williamsburg. For the 30th installment of their artist series, Kenwood has collaborated with Shepard Fairey […]

Releases: REAS and KAWS

If you are like AM, you missed out on today’s Banksy drop. But don’t despair, because there are plenty of other new artist releases out there. Get the info, after the jump.

Releases: Banksy Print – Nola

Guess who’s back…? Banksy and POW have just released a new print “Nola” for all the fans that have been waiting patiently all year. This print was based on his recent New Orleans work “Rain Girl”. “Are you tired of looking out the window at the grey and the rain? Then why not draw the curtains, curl up on the sofa and gaze lovingly at this cheerful little number. It’s the latest print from the pseudonymous mister Banksy and its called ‘Nola’.” -POW It’s been […]

Streets: Faile Spoof

Looks like some clever impersonators are on the loose in the UK. After some of the art Faile pasted up (coinciding with their recent show) was stolen, someone put up these pieces (with a style that imitates Faile) in the same exact spot. Some of the wording reads “AND IN THE DARKNESS THEY FAILED TO STAY UP” and “History is made once again, it should have been a STENCIL”. The classic Faile girl is shown counting money with a giant hand grabbing her with the […]

Kaws x Kanye West

Artists collaborating on album covers is not a new phenomenom, but here is an interesting one from Kanye West that was done by Kaws. This one apparently is only for the iTunes release.  If this is true, then the only place you would see the album cover would be in your Ipod or music players.  Shows what a powerhouse iTunes and downloads have become if money is spent exclusively for the online release.  Not sure why Kanye wouldn’t use the same cover for the hard […]

Close-Up: Faile “Prayer Wheels” and “Circular Palettes”

In our recent review of Faile’s extraordinary show “Lost in Glimmering Shadow’s,” we briefly touched on the new “Prayer Wheels” and “Circular Palettes” which were premiered in the UK. AM now brings you an closer look at these two beautiful hand produced mediums! Faile has really taken urban medium to another level by infusing their “spin” on an age old spiritual instrument. True to the original spiritual Prayer Wheels found in Asia, the detailed graphic carvings on the Prayer Wheels are designed to spin around and be […]

Openings: Clowns! @ Corey Helford Gallery

The Clowns! (previewed) show opened last night in Culver City and AM contributor Marcus was on hand to snap some photos. This group show had a pretty unique and strong lineup as Corey Helford teamed up with Stolenspace (UK) to exhibit artists from both sides of the Atlantic. Photos of all the work after the jump.

Teaser: This is China @ BLVD Gallery

“This is China” is a show organized by Red Star Press that is opening next month in Seattle featuring urban and graffiti artists from China including 0528, Steel Dan, Soos, Cui Nan, Ha Shiyou, Zhang Qitian, Popil, Shen Jingdong, and Yang Jun.  “Graffiti is considered a serious crime in China, and violators incur harsh penalties from the government. Ironically, the Chinese government recently commissioned a number of public graffiti pieces during the 2008 Olympics to portray positive messages about China and the Olympic games. Local […]
