Francisco Diaz aka Pastel recently spent some time in Manila, Philippines, participating in the second edition of the LeBasse Projects curated and produced artBGC mural festival, creating one of his largest floral murals to date. Titled Calamansi and Sampaguita, the piece is based on ancient local traditions, depicting the plants that have a local symbolism. Calamansi is a plant used during funerals as way of purify the body, while the national flower, Sampaguita, represents humility and reverence, and it’s the flower that young kids sell on the streets just to survive. Back in March and April, Julien Malland aka Seth Globepainter spent another couple of weeks traveling and painting around the Fengjing and Shanghai area in China. After two trips in 2014 and 2015 (covered here and here), the Paris-based artist returned to create more work influenced by the local tradition, culture, social and economic situation, as well as the setting he was working in. Upcoming: Nychos – “Ikon” @ Jonathan LeVine Gallery

Coming up on June 25th, a new solo from Austrian artist Nychos will be opening at the Jonathan LeVine Gallery. Mirroring his works on the street, Ikon will features a series of paintings with his recognizable cartoonish dissected imagery. From the glimpses revealed on his Instagram, it looks like he will take aim at pop culture icons like Yoda, Darth Vader, Goofy, Knight Rider, Barbie, and Marilyn Monroe. Discuss Nychos here.

Over the last week, JR (interviewed) has been working on his latest high profile project – painting the iconic pyramid at the Louvre. One month ahead of his upcoming solo show with Mathgoth Gallery, Anders Gjennestad aka STRØK visited Paris and painted his largest mural to date. After two days of work, THE Norwegian artist completed this 25 meters high piece that nicely presents his recognizable style. Depicting four break dancers in midst of their performance, this mural was like most his work – based on the photos the artist took himself. Downtown Oakland was in for a treat last Saturday night. Local artist Lauren Napolitano teamed up with UK’s David Bray and Word To Mother to collaborate on a group exhibition called Better Habits at Athen B. Gallery. Collectively, these three artists’ work compliment each other’s styles so well that at times it was hard to tell who’s who on each piece.
