Streets: ROA (Sweden)

Last week, ROA was caught on the move again, this time popping up in Bromölla, Sweden where he painted a mural for Ifö Center as part of their Artist-in-Residence program. The project originated in the unoccupied floors of a factory with Belgium-based street painter being the first international artist to leave his mark on the external walls. Because the area is known for its prehistoric fossil finds, ROA decided to paint the skeleton of a Tyrannosaurus, a fitting piece in his oeuvre of creature dissections. Photo credit: Henrik Haven. Rewind: Jul 21 – Aug 3

Time for another segment of our Rewind feature. This edition’s highlighted video (via Colossal) comes from Icheon Ceramics Village in Gyeonggi Province, South Korea, home to over 300 ceramics studios. The American Museum of Ceramic Art visited five of the artists (like Kim Seong-Tae seen above) last year to profile their work with some beautiful footage. Check out the overview video below and head over here for more in depth looks at each artist. Preview of Kehinde Wiley / Haiti show at Roberts & Tilton. Bombing […]

Streets: Phlegm (Norway)

Phlegm was recently invited to Norway by Urban Samtidskunst and Galleri Lauritzen to paint a large mural in the old industrial town of Moss. After being forced to take some time off due to neck problems, the Sheffield-based artist created a groundbreaking piece on many levels. The mural was painted on this massive 25x35m wall of an old paper factory that was shut two years ago. The fact that this area having a rebirth with music events, club nights and interesting upcycling studios making new things out of unwanted materials, Phlegm was […]

Studio Visits/Previews: Casey Weldon – “Novel Relic” @ Roq la Rue

Nestled deep in the foothills of the Cascades, Casey Weldon paints diligently to finish up several pieces for his solo show Novel Relic, opening at the Roq la Rue Gallery in Seattle on August 7th. Themes of nature and old technology collide with a color palette borrowed directly from the television color bars seen in several pieces. The serene scenery around the lakeside property has had a heavy influence in these new paintings, as a native flower morphs into a gramophone and ferns become television […]

Streets: Greg “Craola” Simkins (Los Angeles)

It doesn’t happen often that Greg “Craola” Simkins (featured) grabs a spray can, but when he does, he usually creates something exceptional. After not painting walls for quite some time, his newest mural, which he recently finished in Los Angeles, is definitely an example of that. With support from Branded Arts and Graphaids, the LA-based artist took some time off his studio work and upcoming animated I’m Scared: The Movie, in order to create this fantastic piece. Completely figurative, with no letters or other “classic” graffiti elements, the piece […]

Streets: Jeff Soto (Los Angeles) – Part II

As is often the case with public murals when released into the streets, local writers will add their own “opinions” directly onto the works. This is what happened almost immediately to the Jeff Soto (interviewed) wall that was painted in South Central last week (covered) as you can see above. Take a look below he returned to touch up the piece, changing his iconic owl into one of his signature cats in the process… Discuss Jeff Soto here.

Streets: RETNA (Chicago)

For those in Chicago to enjoy Lollapalooza and The Provocateurs opening tonight, make sure you also find time this weekend to take a look at the street art associated with the group exhibition. We already touched on the curator of the show Shepard Fairey and his new mural at Columbia College, but another artist’s work to check out is Los Angeles-based writer RETNA’s (featured) piece at 33 E. Congress for the Wabash Arts Corridor. Photo credit: Jon Furlong. Discuss RETNA here. Discuss this show here.

Streets: Shepard Fairey (Chicago)

With The Provocateurs set to open tomorrow (July 31st) at Block 37 in Chicago, some of the street artists involved have been hard at work getting up around town, not the least of which was Shepard Fairey, who curated the massive group exhibition. Placed on Wabash & 9th on one of Columbia College’s buildings and entitled We Own The Future, the mural will be a welcome addition to Chi-town’s cityscape. We’ll also bring you a look soon at other artists, including Cleon Peterson, RETNA, and POSE, who […]
