Studio Visits: AJ Fosik

AJ Fosik’s sculptural artworks almost need no introduction. In a world where it is increasingly difficult to have a true individual voice as an artist, Fosik’s work has an original aesthetic honed over the years from his roots in graffiti, street art and two-dimensional drawing. AJ decided that his imagery would be better represented in three dimensions around seven years ago, and has continued to immerse himself in the medium of handcrafted woodwork for his iconography inspired art ever since. Using modern woodworking techniques (he doesn’t consider himself […]

Streets / Videos: Herakut – The Giant Storybook Project (Part I)

It’s time to update you on something that German duo Herakut have been working on recently – The Giant Storybook Project. Acting on their long-time desires to create a children’s book, Jasmin (interviewed) and Falk have taken to the streets around the world to paint the “pages” of their story. Murals of Lily, Jay, two giants, and their adventures have already hit the walls in Kentucky, Germany, Montreal, Toronto, Rochester, and San Francisco. We’ll be taking a closer look at this project (scheduled to go through 2013) as it […]

Streets: “Elevate South Broad Mural Projects” (Atlanta)

Last week, artists Hense, Push, Tilt (above), Sever, and Born came together to paint some new walls for the Elevate South Broad Mural Project in Atlanta. Located at South Broad Street between MLK Boulevard and Mitchell Street, the new work beautifies an area that sorely needed some love. Hopefully, we’ll continue to see more of these projects in the future. Discuss Tilt here. Discuss Push here. Photo Credit: Nick Mickolas / Graffuturism.

Videos / Rumor Mill: RETNA x Louis Vuitton

Remember the mural we mentioned in our Overtime article a couple weeks ago that RETNA (featured) painted for Louis Vuitton? Footage has now been released of the MSK-affiliated writer working on facade of the LV Miami Design District store, covering it with his signature urban calligraphy. Even more interesting have been the rumors that RETNA will be collaborating with the fashion house on some apparel after LV imagery was seen in some of his paintings and he was seen sporting a scarf with his markings on […]

Streets: RIME x Converse (New York)

After recently joining some friends for a burner on the rooftops of Brooklyn, RIME returns with another mural in BK (on Grand and Union). Like another piece we highlighted from David Ellis (here), this wall from the MSK-affiliated graffiti artist was secured by Converse. If you look carefully, you’ll see the shoe company’s signature star mixed in with the familiar cartoonish imagery of the artist otherwise known as Jersey Joe. Photo credit: Public Ad Campaign. Discuss RIME here.

After hitting up a slate of festivals recently (Komafest, Walk & Talk, and Fame Festival), Portuguese sensation Vhils has headed over to Brazil for a project of his own. These new pieces created through some of the favelas of Rio de Janeiro attempt to bring attention to the inhabitants of these slum areas. Take a look at several more walls he made his mark on in the photos below. Discuss Vhils here.

We lead off this week’s review of street art with a new mural from Roa in Puerto Rico. Painted for the Los Muros Hablan Festival, the Belgium-based muralist rendered a giant Iguana (an invasive pest there, chewing up plants and crops and burrowing under roads and dikes) holding a Coquí, a small frog endemic to the island. Other notable walls this week come courtesy of Augustine Kofie – Italy (source), Aryz – Peurto Rico (source), Case – Germany (source), Escif – Croatia & Spain, Gaia – Philadelphia, Sam3 […]
