Streets: Love Letter – Steve “ESPO ICY” Powers

We took the roadtrip down to the City of Brotherly Love to grab a cheesesteak (or two) and experience firsthand Steve Powers’ ambitious public art project entitled “Love Letter.” Powers (as ESPO ICY) and crew got back up on many of the same West Philadelphia rooftops that he used to hit back in the day, to paint dozens of murals on buildings along the Market Street elevated train line between 45th and 63rd streets.Together, the walls form a sentimental dialog between young lovers, but they […]

Highlights: Recommended openings for Feb 17 – 22

The year is just underway, but we can say without a doubt one of the year’s highlights goes down this Saturday in Southern California. The godfather of the so-called “low brow” movement brings his monumental solo exhibition back home to California after turning heads in the Big Apple this past winter. “Conceptual Realism In The Service Of The Hypothetical”, featuring new paintings and sculptures from Robert Williams, opens this Saturday at the Cal State Northridge Art Gallery and is an event not to be missed if […]

Streets: Swoon

It looks like Swoon (Interviewed) recently visited Philadelphia and gifted the city of brotherly love with some of her street pieces. In town for Philagrafika 2010, the city’s international festival celebrating print in contemporary art, Swoon’s wheatpastes blended in nicely with the snowy landscape. A good time to be in Philly with ESPO’s epic “A Love Letter For You” project also available for viewing. More photos via the Street Spot after the jump…

Streets: TrustoCorp in New York City

TrustoCorp, who we last saw in Los Angeles and Miami, has recently hit up New York City with a fresh batch of newly modified street signs. Now implementing government-grade reflective vinyl in all their work, TrustoCorp’s latest campaign blends in almost seamlessly with the urban landscape, yet still maintains enough of a presence to be noticed by the NY Post.  Word on the street is that TrustoCorp will be heading to San Francisco next, stay tuned!

Interviews: Handiedan

In a letter written in 1906 to poet Alexander Blok, renowned Russian novelist Andrey Bely remarked on Paris’ red-light district destination Moulin Rouge: “Naked feet, and thighs, and arms, and breasts were being flung on me from bloody-red foam of translucent clothes.. In front of my nose a stream of bowler hats and black veils was still pulsing, foamy with bluish green and warm orange of feathers worn by the night beauties.” His description of the infamous “Red Mill” strikes one as much more scintillating […]

Sketchbook: Josh Keyes – “Fragment”

Following up on a great opening at JLG, Josh Keyes posted up some additional photos of his creative process for the creation of his newest body of work “Fragment” – (covered). The images allow us to gain some access into the meticulous thought process Josh goes through before ever laying a brush on canvas. It’s incredibly insightful to see the all the notes and sketches that lead to the creation of many of the pieces that we saw at the show. We also note some of the […]

Streets: Zilda

After we brought you a look at the risqué “The Red Light Exhibit”, the ESPO Love Train, and the Sam3 Valentine’s prints, we have one more to share with your loved one – the “romantic” street art of Zilda. First introduced to the French street artist by Unurth, we like the recent series of classically inspired work. Here’s wishing you all a Happy Valentine’s Day from AM. More work from Zilda after the jump.

February is well underway and the sheer amount of quality shows opening over the coming days makes one wish they’ve figured out that whole cloning thing already. Wish we could be in NYC, LA and UK all at once this weekend. Hard to pick just one, but a show that’s sure to get a ton of love on the web is the upcoming show at Lazarides featuring Bast and Faile. Also noteworthy is the final show taking place at Billy Shire’s Culver City location this […]
