Streets: Mike Stilkey – ‘The Zoo Drop’ Mural @ The Standard (DTLA)

Mike Stilkey (interviewed) has just finished a 42 foot long installation at Downtown LA’s mural hotspot outside The Standard hotel and gave us a little background to the piece: ‘A homeless guy came by and told me he hadn’t seen anything like this since the zoo drop. I asked him what the zoo drop was and he said it was when all those planes and helicopters dropped animals out of the sky. Hence the title of the piece just had to be The Zoo Drop.’ Stilkey […]

Streets: Flying Fortress x Nychos (Dublin)

Last weekend in Dublin, Flying Fortress and Nychos collaborated on a sweet mural for the All City Tivoli Jam. This isn’t the first time the two have worked together if you remember the piece they painted several months ago in Vienna entitled “The Anatomy of Mother Bear Giving Birth” when FF visited his friend Austrian friend. This time around, the Fortress’ signature character is again dissected in Nychos’ distinctive style. Discuss Flying Fortress here.

Streets: JR (New York)

After a series of inspiring murals with Jose Parla in Cuba as part of his ever-expanding Wrinkles Of The City project and a TED Talk on the one year anniversary of his wish to turn the world Inside Out, JR has returned to New York for a new large-scale mural. Set next to the popular pedestrian walkway, The High Line, the piece took several days to complete and will be testament to the French photograffeur’s skills in a high-traffic location. Discuss JR here.

Streets: Vhils (Lisbon)

After putting a new piece up at the revolving mural project Le M.U.R in Paris (covered), Vhils headed home to work on another wall in Lisbon. In contrast to the one in France where he used techniques similar to what you see from the artist for some pieces in gallery shows, this new piece in Portugal sees his classic chisel and hammer technique. Coincidentally, it sounds like he is currently working on upcoming shows in Paris and Lisbon that looks like it might be going in […]

Take a look below at more in-progress photos and detailed looks at the LADS having some aquatic fun courtesy of the two English geezers. Discuss The London Police here.

Streets: Ericailcane (Belgium)

Earlier this month, Ericailcane painted a set of three murals in Ghent, Belgium utilizing his distinctive illustrative style to coincide with the second edition of EI. The renowned Italian street artist painted the pieces on the outer walls of the artists’ workspace ‘het vogelnest vzw’ (Nieuwevaart 118D – 9000 GHENT – Belgium) where an event will be held on May 19th with lectures and a screening of Exit Through the Gift Shop. Discuss Ericailcane here.

Streets: Banksy (London)

A statement on child labour in the UK has appeared on the side of Poundland on Whymark Avenue in London with an underaged worker hard at work with a sewing machine creating some bunting (perhaps for the upcoming Queen’s Jubilee?). Although not confirmed as of yet by Banksy, the stenciling and style are all strongly reminiscent of Mr. B’s handiwork. Photo credit: the lonely villein.

Streets: Yoskay Yamamoto (Los Angeles) Part II

After coming off an impressive exhibition at Lebasse Projects (covered) where he showed his versatility by focusing on sculptural works, Yoskay Yamamoto (interviewed) decided to try something new in his artistic career and go large scale (see in progress pics here). Set up through Branded Arts, the mural is actually his first and it clearly showed that he can paint his signature style on not only the small canvas. Using a variety of stencils to create an interesting pattern of white stars blending onto the […]

Streets: World Roundup (May 7 – May 13)

For our summary of walls this week, we have for you as our featured wall – REYES in Detroit. The motor city has become one of the hotspots for street activity recently as the tanking economy has ironically led to more abandoned buildings facilitating the rise of public art. Also, the Detroit Beautification Project (first mentioned here) has been bringing in artists from all over to get up around town. We’ll have a summary on the project soon (also see Sever’s piece) but for now […]
