Setup: Swoon – “The Light After” @ Library Street Collective (Detroit)

Along with unveiling an installation at the Detroit Institute of Arts (covered) while in the Motor City, Swoon (interviewed) will also be opening a solo show at Library Street Collective on October 10th. The Light After will be an immersive exhibition covering approximately 2,500 square feet of gallery walls and ceilings with hundreds of hand-cut paper and Mylar elements. Openings: Allison Sommers & Ozabu – “Bruxism” & “彷徨 (Wander)” @ Thinkspace

A couple weekends ago, Allison Sommers (interviewed) & Ozabu opened their shows at Thinkspace Gallery in Culver City. Bruxism in the main space was an immersive solo from Sommers featuring her increasingly abstracted meaty subject matter at times housed in various paraphernalia, completed by an installation that was like a record of how the new pieces were conceived and completed. In the project room, Ozabu presented nine new works collectively entitled 彷徨 (Wander), her debut solo with the gallery, with details that need to be seen in person to be appreciated. Streets: Isaac Cordal (Croatia)

The Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Rijeka, Croatia, recently hosted Isaac Cordal as the next artist to participate in their Spajalica public art project. The Galician artist spent over a week in the coastal town working on a series of installations that continue his previous work. Inspired by the city’s rich industrial and cultural heritage, Cordal cleverly used the aged buildings and facades as backdrop for his recognizable work. Streets: Ai Weiwei – “Reframe” @ Palazzo Strozzi (Florence)

Over the weekend, Ai Weiwei unveiled a provocative new installation on the facade of Palazzo Strozzi in Florence which continues his commentary on the current refugee crisis in Europe. Entitled Reframe, the Chinese artist’s latest public work will features 22 life rafts attached to the historic building’s windows, a striking critique of the handling of the humanitarian crisis. Upcoming: Swoon – “Thalassa” @ Detroit Institute of Arts

Starting on September 24th, the Detroit Institute of Arts will unveil an installation from Swoon (interviewed) entitled Thalassa. The 20-foot tall, 400-pound sculptural piece named after the Greek goddess of the sea – originally displayed in New Orleans (covered) – will be adapted for DIA’s Great Hall. The massive work from the American artist will be suspended from the ceiling and will coincide with a mural project in Detroit’s Jefferson-Chalmers district. On August 30th, the second street art biennale ARTMOSSPHERE opened its doors at Moscow Manege. Introducing 26 Russian and 42 international artists whose practice was and/or is shaped by street art, the show is definitely unique in its size and concept. Tomorrow night (September 15th) in New York, Daniel Arsham will be opening a show at Galerie Perrotin entitled Circa 2345. The exhibition will be the locally-based artist’s 11th solo with the gallery, but his first in their NYC branch. Currently in Brussels, Isaac Cordal’s show entitled La Comédie humaine is on view at La Médiatine. The series of sculptures and installations continues to document the lives of the little cement businessmen that the Spanish artist is known for, mirroring his work on the streets. It’s always interesting so see how the sculptor from Galicia uses the indoor space as he is able to expand on his public art with larger scale installations that further explore his satire and commentary on politics, bureaucracy, power, and environmental issues. Last week, Joshua Liner Gallery became the venue for Wayne White’s new solo entitled I’M HAVING A DIALOGUE WITH THE UNIVERSE AND YOU’RE JUST SITTING THERE. Transforming the New York showspace by taking over the walls with sculptural cutouts and murals, he then strategically embedded his paintings in place to complete the effect. The artist known for his witty word paintings (and his set and puppet designs for Pee-wee’s Playhouse) even transformed sections into what looked to be huge vintage painting – just like the ones he overlays his text onto. Streets: Patrick Shearn – “Liquid Shard” (Los Angeles)

Liquid Shard was an installation in downtown LA that was on view for two weeks created by Patrick Shearn of Poetic Kinetics. The undulating piece featuring suspended holographic mylar and monofilament arranged in a long ribbon-like canopy in Pershing Square and measured 15,000 square feet in length.
