Another show we visited in Culver City on Saturday night was Jim Houser’s showing at LeBasse Projects. Featuring meticulously constructed installations of his paintings and sculptural items, As Quiet As Itʼs Kept put on display the Philly artist’s signature patchwork of favorite items, creatures, words, symbols that for this exhibition was inspired by the impact of fatherhood and explores and the new responsibilities faced. We last had the pleasure of seeing one of Jim Houser’s installations about a year back at last year’s Armory Week in New York. Now, as it was back then, we are still intrigued by the Philadelphia-based artist’s use of his own brand of symbology and visual language. Last Thursday night, Todd James (aka REAS) unveiled a new body of works at New York’s Gering & Lopez. Entitled King of the Wild Frontier, this series takes another step forward from his previous showing with the gallery. Leaving snow storms and presidential elections delirium in France, the French graffiti crew Da Mental Vaporz decided to head down under to Melbourne for a spectacular show at Rtist Gallery. AM recently attended the wild premiere of F*CK Art, at New York’s Museum of Sex. As the bold title indicates, the group exhibition curated with the help of Mighty Tanaka aimed to pique the interest in both sex and art by pushing and melding the boundaries with the movement from the streets. AM stopped by Bar Lane Studios in York to take a look at Claire Hind & Gary Winters’ collaborative installation and exhibition entitled Kong Lear. The title, and also the subject matter is a juxtaposition of imagery from the celebrated tale of King Kong interwoven with texts from King Lear, and also includes new writing. Last night, AM attended the early viewing of Brian Donnelly’s (a.k.a. KAWS) latest museum exhibition Downtime and artist talk at the High Museum of Art in Atlanta. The impressive multi-level showcase featured both old and new works from the Brooklyn based artist. AM was at Tate Modern on Tuesday to visit the major retrospective by Yayoi Kusama, whose separate show at Brisbane’s Gallery of Modern Art we recently covered. The London exhibition is spread over fourteen rooms and features a selection of works — drawing, painting, collage, film, sculpture and installation — spanning a period of six decades. At this year’s Art Los Angeles Contemporary, visitors were greeted at the fair’s entrance with Judy Chicago’s dazzling performance installation, Sublime Environment. As part of Pacific Standard Time’s Performance and Public Art Festival, the large scale installation was created with 25 tons of dry ice, with help from the Silverlake non-profit, Materials & Applications, and a group of 40 volunteers. AM was at Tony’s Gallery in Shoreditch on Thursday to see the first UK solo show by Olek (set-up and teaser photos here). The New York-based artist has been making the most of her extended London visit, transforming the ground floor of the gallery into a domestic setting filled with crocheted furniture and other household items.
